Woodbury Council Mulls Alcohol for Bielenberg Sports Center Restaurant

The City Council recently examined plans for a new restaurant at the sports center, which is currently undergoing a major expansion.

Want to sit down at the Bielenberg Sports Center and have a bloody Mary on a weekend morning? The Woodbury City Council examined Wednesday plans for a new restaurant as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project, and alcohol sales were big part of the discussion. Greg Gartner, whose company is heading up food service at the new facility, said he plans to apply for a full liquor license. Related: New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look Councilwoman Julie Ohs expressed concerns about having alcohol sales at a facility where children are the primary patrons. “It gets a little tricky,” she said. Gartner said there would be some sort of divider, possibly a railing, keeping the restaurant area separate from …

New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look

The restaurant is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday examined plans for a new restaurant at the Bielenberg Sports Center. Gartner Restaurant Holdings has been selected to handle food service at the new complex, which is currently under construction. A restaurant would be built on the second floor of the new lobby, and Gartner Restaurant Holdings would also run a snack bar on the first floor. Greg Gartner said his company has experience providing food service at other sports facilities and the concept for the Woodbury space was partially inspired by restaurants at the Xcel Energy Center. Other municipal sports facilities are including restaurants, said Bob Klatt, Woodbury Parks and Recreation director. “The trend is going that way,” he said. The plans …

Well, during the winter months, a nice cup of hot chocolate will go well beside that fancy fireplace in the picture. Out with the splashpad, I say. Put in a pool that would be used.   more ›

Woodbury Council Makes Informal Decision on Splash Pad

The water feature has been considered as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion plans.

Woodbury seems ready to move ahead with plans for a splash pad at the Bielenberg Sports Center. The City Council took an informal poll about the water feature during Wednesday night’s workshop meeting. No formal action was taken, but it seems as though the splash pad has the votes to pass when it comes before the council later. The splash pad has long been considered as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. It would be sited north of where the Madison’s Place playground is going to be built, adjacent to where the new field house is being built. Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens said she supports the plan, and a splash pad would be a “good use” of park-dedication funds, which would pay for the water feature. (Estimates have put…

I'm just tired of paying for everybody's entertainment. You want a pool, pay for a pool. I have access to a pool, I pay for it. Why should I also pay for your pool, splash pad, etc. Sounds like wasteful spending to me. Once Eagle Valley Golf Course starts letting me golf for free, then we can consider a free pool.   more ›

Woodbury Council to Discuss Restaurant at Bielenberg Sports Center

The new restaurant is part of the expansion project currently underway.

The company chosen to provide food service at the expanded Bielenberg Sports Center envisions a full-scale restaurant on the second floor of the lobby. The proposal is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. Plans call for a new field house, two-story lobby, outdoor rink and improvements to the existing ice arenas, which will remain in place. Construction is underway. The Woodbury City Council during a workshop meeting Wednesday, May 15, is expected to examine the concept for the new restaurant and concession area. The proposal from Gartner Restaurant Holdings features a “full-service restaurant on the second floor, a concession stand on the first floor and food service carts and potential service in the surrounding fields…

Woodbury Man Makes Plea for Splash Pad

Michael Litgen spoke during Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting.

It’s just a matter of when, according to Michael Litgen. “A splash pad is coming to Woodbury,” he said. Litgen spoke during the open forum portion of Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting, urging the city to install the water feature as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion plans. The city has been considering the splash pad as it moves forward with the $21.8 million project, which includes a new field house, two-story lobby and outdoor rink, among other updates. An all-inclusive playground, Madison's Place, is also planned at the site. Litgen said a splash pad would improve the overall project, comparing it to the way the Lookout Ridge indoor playground enhances the city’s Central Park facility. “This adds to the …

Demolition Work at Woodbury's Bielenberg Sports Center

The construction is the latest step toward a new $21.8 million facility.

Site grading, pond draining and lobby demolition at the Bielenberg Sports Center took place Tuesday, May 7. The work marks the latest phase in Woodbury's $21.8 million BSC expansion project, which calls for a new field house, two-story lobby, plaza and outdoor rink, along with other upgrades. The existing ice arenas will remain (but see improvements), and people are asked to enter through the west rink doors. Bielenberg staff is operating out of the skate-sharpening area, according to this week's report from the city administrator. Woodbury marked the construction with a dome-deflation ceremony last month, though the bubble had to be briefly re-inflated due to weather. The expected opening date for the new facility is the first quarter of …

Woodbury’s Bielenberg Dome Goes Back Up Due to Snow

Having water on the canvas would have delayed the project.

Monday was supposed to be the first and last time the Bielenberg Sports Center's dome was deflated. But it will probably happen again Thursday. After Woodbury held a “bubble bursting” ceremony Monday evening, snow started coming down, so the dome went back up that night. Having water in top of the canvas and on the turf at the sports center would have slowed the project, said Dave Black, manager at the BSC. Had the air and heat not been turned on again “we would have had a disaster on our hands. … And by disaster I mean three more weeks of waiting,” Black said. It was a “maintenance decision” to re-inflate the dome, he said. The dome was taken down as the city prepares for a $21.8 million expansion project. Related: In Woodbury, Down Goes …

In Woodbury, Down Goes the Dome

The city held a dome-deflation ceremony Monday afternoon, marking a major step toward a $21.8 million expansion project.

There really wasn’t much to it. They turned off the air, opened the doors and the Bielenberg Sports Center’s dome—for the first and last time—was deflated. “It’s pretty primitive,” said Dave Black, manager of the Bielenberg Sports Center. Woodbury held a “bubble bursting” event Monday afternoon, marking the beginning of a $21.8 million expansion project and the end of the dome, which has stood since 1995. The bubble has withstood strong winds and snowstorms over the years, but after a simple pull of a lever by Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens, the dome was deflated in about half an hour. “I’m a little bit nostalgic,” Black said, noting that he’s logged about 1,000 miles jogging in the dome during his lunch hour over the past 17 years. Still, …

Bielenberg Dome Deflation a Go; Contractors Selected

It will be the first time the dome will be deflated since it was constructed in 1995.

After two delays because of weather, Woodbury is ready to move ahead with the deflation of the Bielenberg Sports Center’s dome. The public is invited to watch the dome deflate. The event is set for 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 22. Jason Egerstrom, Woodbury communications coordinator, confirmed Friday that the city intends to go ahead with the deflation. It will be the first time the dome will be deflated since it was constructed in 1995. Snow this week caused the city to delay the event; the forecast for Monday does call for rain. Woodbury is building a new field house to replace the aging bubble. The $21.8 million project also includes a new two-story lobby, outdoor pleasure rink and upgrades to the existing ice arenas. Once complete, the …

Woodbury Delays Dome Deflation at Bielenberg Sports Center

With rain and snow in the forecast for Wednesday, the city opted to hold off the deflation of the bubble.

The ceaseless winter weather has delayed the deflation of the dome. Woodbury on Monday announced that the deflation of the bubble at the Bielenberg Sports Center has been pushed back to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 22. It was initially scheduled for Wednesday. Bringing down the BSC bubble, built in 1995, will mark a major step toward the city’s $21.8 expansion project, which calls for a new permanent field house, outdoor pleasure rink, and two-story lobby linking the new structure and existing ice arenas. “The dome proved to be a functional and durable facility, standing tall through straight-line winds, severe thunderstorms and blizzards for more than 17 years,” Bob Klatt, Woodbury Parks and Recreation director, said in a release last week …
