Fundraiser for Baby Born With Cancer Set for Feb. 17

Guardian Angels Catholic Church will host an upcoming fundraiser for Jacqueline Carlson, a baby who has spent the bulk of her young life in intensive care. Jacqueline was born Nov. 1, 2012, five weeks premature and six days after doctors learned she had a tumor in her left shoulder during an ultrasound, according to her CaringBridge site. “I was shocked at the size of it, it was right on her shoulder, it was right here and it just looked almost the size of her head, it was huge,” her mother, Tara Carlson, told KSTP. Doctors determined Jacqueline has a rare form of cancer, and she has had to endure 10 operations and chemotherapy, according to her CaringBridge site. Tribute Planned for Glen Moon, Longtime Woodbury Youth Coach Who Has Battled Cancer

Friends are planning a ceremony at halftime of Friday night’s basketball game between Woodbury and East Ridge.

Woodbury resident Glen Moon has touched the lives of countless local athletes over the years as a youth sports coach. In December 2011 he was diagnosed with cancer. Earlier this week, Moon decided not to go forward with additional chemotherapy treatments, according to his CaringBridge site. Friends are planning a tribute for Moon during halftime of the Friday, Feb. 1, basketball game between Woodbury and East Ridge. The game begins at 7:15 p.m. “Glen has devoted nearly two decades of his life to develop integrity, strong character and improve the skills in every kid he coached,” friend John Wallgren said in an email about the tribute. Woodbury High School teacher Andrew (Andy) Sommer, who had been battling cancer, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, 2012. “We are mourning the loss of our colleague and friend. He remains an outstanding member of the Woodbury High School faculty, touching the lives of countless students, staff and parents,” Principal Linda Plante said in a statement. “As a College in the Schools Spanish instructor, Andy brought rigor to the classroom, and laughter and joy to his students. In Woodbury, Swimming, Biking, Running to Help Kids with Cancer

District 833 students are training for the upcoming events, and looking to raise $20,000 for the Miracles of Mitch Foundation.

A Red Rock Elementary student’s battle with cancer moved her peers at the Woodbury school last summer. Literally. Nearly 30 Red Rock students participated in last year’s MiracleKids Triathlon, a Miracles of Mitch Foundation event that raises money for families whose children are going through cancer treatment. This summer, however, the school opened up participation to other District 833 students, and several more have stepped up as the local group tries to raise $20,000 for the event, said Andrew Caflisch, principal at Red Rock Elementary. Already $10,900 has been raised for the August triathlons, and group-training sessions have been organized by one of the school’s parents, a trainer, Caflisch said. Woodbury Relay for Life Just Shy of Fundraising Goal

People can still contribute toward this year’s American Cancer Society fundraiser through Aug. 31.

While South Washington County Relay for Life organizers expect to be short of their own fundraising goal, they will likely hit the $270,000 mark the American Cancer Society set for the event. Mara Mayberry, co-chair of this year’s Relay for Life, said $238,500 had been raised as of Saturday morning. That was behind last year’s total at that point ($235,000), but she still anticipates $270,000 will be raised. People can donate through the event website until Aug. 31, and Mayberry said she expects a few big checks to come in from sponsors. Woodbury Rallies to Support Cancer Victim

A benefit for youth-sports backer Glen Moon is set for May 19.

Woodbury resident Glen Moon has cancer. Talking to him, you’d never know it. It’s Moon’s sense of humor and positive attitude that has helped him cope since he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in September 2011. He’s undergone chemotherapy, radiation treatment and failed surgeries. “I’m at peace with it,” Moon said. “You can cry or you can laugh. I choose to laugh.” When one of Moon’s surgeries didn’t go as expected, he asked the doctor for a refund. “He laughed at that one,” he said. Woodbury Hockey To Donate To Jablonski Fund

As part of an annual cancer research fundraiser, Woodbury will donate to a fund for the paralyzed Minnesota high school hockey player.

For the past few years, Woodbury and Park high schools have raised money for childhood cancer research with a friendly competition between the schools stretching to the ice rink. Once again this year, the two schools are competing to see which can raise more money—with the coach of the losing team wearing the opponent’s jersey during the first period of Saturday’s game. But against the backdrop of the paralysis of Jack Jablonski—the Benilde-St. Margaret's hockey player who was paralyzed by a hit he took in a Dec. 30 game—Woodbury has decided to use part of the money raised to make a donation to a fund set up for Jablonski’s family.
