Last Big Snowfall of the Year for Woodbury?

Patch asked Woodbury resident and WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer about the weather on Tuesday.

WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer, who lives in Woodbury, said the storm had dumped just over six inches in the city by mid-morning. But for the most part, the accumulation was over, he said. “It could snow the rest of the day and it won’t amount to much,” Shaffer said Tuesday. “Maybe another half inch or an inch.” Related: Schools Closed, Flakes Falling, Winter Continues: Snow Day in Woodbury One interesting note about the snowstorm: Shaffer said it initially looked like a typical clipper system that would amount to 2-3 inches for much of the state, but other weather systems made the snow more severe. “It was a very rare setup,” he said. While there are other systems on the horizon, they will likely be of the rain-snow mix variety, Shaffer…

Snow Total ‘Caught Everybody Off Guard’ Says WCCO’s Chris Shaffer

The meteorologist, who lives in Woodbury, said most didn’t expect the system to extend as far south as it did.

As soon as he woke up Sunday morning, Woodbury resident and WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer told his wife: “We’re going to get a foot of snow.” Which wasn’t what was initially projected for the Twin Cities. Most forecasters and models said Sunday’s total for the area would be about seven inches, Shaffer said. He was projecting a foot of snow in areas north, but the system shifted south. “This one caught everybody off guard,” said Shaffer, who recently won a local Emmy as best weather anchor. Sunday’s snowstorm was the biggest for the Twin Cities since Feb. 20, 2011, when more than 11 inches fell, he said. The biggest storm last winter (Dec. 3) was only 4.2 inches, Shaffer said.        Related: Major Snowstorm Hits Woodbury: Share Your …

WCCO’s Chris Shaffer on Awards, Weather and Woodbury

The meteorologist recently won the Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for best weather anchor.

It might have been doing the weather in a hot-air balloon. Or dropping Taylor Swift references during a newscast. Either way, Woodbury resident Chris Shaffer has a new award for his mantle. Shaffer on Saturday took home the Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for best weather anchor. It was the first time he entered the competition, after friend and WCCO reporter Jason DeRusha urged him to give it a shot. “I was never driven as an award kind of guy,” he told Patch during a wide-ranging interview Wednesday. “I liked the party. I should have gone to the parties over the years.” A former deejay at several Twin Cities radio stations, Shaffer often tries to work musical references into his broadcasts. “And I try to make them make sense,” he said…
