South Washington County Adult Basic Education classes got a visit from Sen. Susan Kent last week.
Woodbury Sen. Susan Kent last week visited with recent immigrants looking to become citizens and others working to get a better handle on the English language. Kent, a first-term DFLer, visited two South Washington County Adult Basic Education classes on Friday, April 5. Adult Basic Education (ABE), part of District 833 Community Education, works to help people with job searches and retraining, along with courses on English and computer skills, said Susie Evans, ABE coordinator. About 300 people took classes in 2012, she said. The ABE program partners with the Washington County Workforce Center and South Washington County Schools. Whether it’s getting a GED or helping people gain citizenship, the classes in general are meant to advance …

Cheers Pablo will open in Tamarack Village early next year.
Think it would be fun to have a glass of wine and do some painting with your friends? Cheers Pablo, a new art studio that will offer classes and events taught by local artists, is set to open in Woodbury’s Tamarack Village in early January 2013. The business will host corporate events, kids birthday parties and other functions in two rooms at the space, between Viking Blinds and LensCrafters at 8362 Tamarack Village, said CEO John Bedard, who lives in Woodbury. People can check the Cheers Pablo website to see its calendar of events and sign up for painting sessions, he said. It will be the first Cheers Pablo to open, Bedard said. “There is a real need for it in the community and we hope to inspire a lot of people,” he said. Bedard’s wife, …

Instructors from the reality-television show taught classes and hung out with students on Thursday.
There was a lot of screaming Thursday at Woodbury’s DelMonico Dance Studio. Instructors from the reality-television show Dance Moms: Miami came in to teach classes and take photos with students. “They were so excited,” owner Kim DelMonico said as her pupils posed with the two instructors. “They were over the moon.” She said the show is a hit with her students, and she’s also a fan. “I love it,” DelMonico said. “But it’s on when I’m teaching, so have to Tivo it.” The dance studio tries to bring in guest instructors when possible, she said, and Victor Smalley and Angel Armas brought their “inspirational” teaching style to Woodbury. “For them it’s more about the passion and the heart in dance—not how many tricks you can do,” DelMonico said. A…

Continuing a family tradition, Legacy Dance Studio gets hip in Woodbury.
The Woodbury Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for one of its newest members, Legacy Dance Studio of Woodbury. The studio opened Nov. 15, 2011, and business has been brisk so far, said Scott Drikakis, who owns Legacy Dance Studio with his wife Angie. “We’re definitely signing up new kids each week,” he said. “It’s been great.” The family has been in the dance studio business for some time, Drikakis said, starting when his mother worked at a Plymouth studio years ago. In 1998 she opened Legacy Dance Studio in Oakdale. Drikakis, a teacher Legacy Dance, said the business employs four other instructors and offers competition hip-hop dancing. The studio also offers tap, jazz and ballet. It being next door to a …

Lake Middle School civics students check out the voting process at the gym on Election Day.
Paul Krumrie’s civics class is somewhat different from a typical government course in which students learn about the branches of government. It stresses the importance of the democratic process and being involved in the world in general, he said. On Election Day, the Lake Middle School teacher brought eighth-grade students to the school gym to see how the voting process works. “They see that they’re going to be part of it someday,” Krumrie said. “They learn about the Bill of Rights, but they see that there are responsibilities that go with those rights.” During elections, students often tour the polling area at the school, said Krumrie, who has taught at Lake Middle since it opened. Election judges on Tuesday told students about the city’s…

District 833 officials say benefits of immersion ‘far outweigh’ drawbacks.
As students in District 833’s Spanish immersion program near high school, school officials are working to determine what type of classes they will take in the future. In a Nov. 3 workshop, the South Washington County School Board discussed the program as a whole and how Spanish classes may look at the high school and middle school levels. Current seventh-grade Spanish immersion students will continue the program in high school level stating in 2013, which presents some opportunities and challenges for district officials, Linda Plante, Woodbury High School principal, said at the meeting. Plante said the high school Spanish program will need to be expanded because the fluency level of the immersion students coming into high school will far …

The Loft Stage hosted its second summer workshop series with a focus on learning and improving theater skills.
Even though the official first day of school isn’t until tomorrow, some Woodbury-area students opted to start a little earlier. The Loft Stage hosted a free theater summer workshop Aug. 18-19. Ninety students in grades six and up spent two days learning about everything from musical movement to comedic timing to the technical aspects of running a theatre. “We’re working on building the program, but not exclusively for East Ridge,” said coordinator Amanda Hestwood, who also serves as theater coordinator, musical director, and Drama Club adviser. “Part of The Loft pact mission is education with community outreach, so it was open to kids from all districts that will never go through our program.” Attendance tripled from last year, which was …

Jinglun Chinese School in Woodbury offers classes for the increasingly popular language.
Plenty of parents can brag that their children received A’s on their last algebra tests or are reading a grade level above the other students, but few can likely say their kids are mastering another language before junior high. Andrea Backlund is one of those parents. Her 8-year-old daughter Brooke, a student at Liberty Ridge Elementary in Woodbury, is also enrolled at Jinglun Chinese School. Backlund, a member of the Jinglun PTA, said her daughter heard of the program from a first-grade friend whose mother teaches at the school. Prior to enrolling at Jinglun, which offers classes in Mandarin Chinese—the most commonly spoken language in the world—Singapore Mathamatics and dance, Brooke attended Chinese classes in Minneapolis. When Backlund…
