Woodbury Drive Closes, Police Step Up Speeding Enforcement

The northern portion of the roadwork project begins first.

A portion of Woodbury Drive was set to close Monday as the biggest roadwork project of the year finally gets underway following delays because of weather. The road will be expanded to four lanes from Park Crossing to a quarter mile south of Bailey Road. Roundabouts will be installed at Lake and Bailey roads. The northern portion of the project will be completed first, and the road will be closed for about three months from Park Crossing to Lake Road, according to project updates from Washington County. Once that work is completed, crews will begin construction on the southern portion. Meanwhile, Woodbury police on Sunday conducted enhanced speed enforcement along Eagle Valley Drive. Fire Tears Hole in Roof of Farmhouse on Woodbury Drive

The fire department got the call at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27.

Woodbury crews battled a house fire, as well as the elements, at the 4500 block of Woodbury Drive early Thursday morning. The fire was mostly contained to the attic of the old farmhouse, and investigators are focusing on the chimney as a possible cause, said Todd Johnson, Woodbury fire chief. “The attic was fully involved,” he said. The call came in from the homeowner at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and firefighters were at the house until 7 a.m. Older homes are typically built with heavier lumber, which burns longer, Johnson said. Crews were on the scene for several hours to ensure it didn’t rekindle. No one were hurt, but four people were displaced as a result of the fire, and the Red Cross was working to assist the family, Johnson said. …

Council Approves Woodbury Drive Expansion Plans

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday approved the project's main design parameters. What do you think of the plans?

After months of discussion, several public meetings and one “noggin cam,” the Woodbury City Council on Wednesday approved the fundamental elements of the Woodbury Drive expansion project. That includes four lanes from Park Crossing to a quarter mile south of Bailey Road, roundabouts at the Lake and Bailey intersections, trails on both sides of the street, narrower shoulders and lanes, and about $1 million in landscaping work. The council voted 4-1 on the project's broad strokes, with Councilman Paul Rebholz against, and the body was unanimous on two other measures that move the project forward. The county's $13.3 million roadwork project, which has encountered challenges because of the narrow right-of-way in that area, is expected to begin…

In those early discussions there was a lot of smoke and mirrors. No reason was given but it could have been the cost and the need for trails and ponds to pacify the Greens.   more ›

Council Preview: Woodbury Drive Expansion Approval on the Docket

The council is set to vote on several measures that would move the project forward at Wednesday night’s meeting.

More lanes. Roundabouts. Trails. Pedestrian safety. Every foot counts. Officials have held several meetings and engaged in plenty of discussion about the Woodbury Drive expansion project, which will expand the roadway from two lanes to four from Park Crossing south to Saint Ambrose of Woodbury. Roundabouts are planned for the Lake and Bailey road intersections. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday is expected vote on moving ahead with the $13.3 million project. (The city’s portion of the cost is about $3.5 million.) Specifically, council members will vote on three resolutions: The expansion project is meant to meet the 20-year traffic needs of the area, but the planned work has faced challenges because of the narrow right-of-way along …

Thanks for scooping me Paul! (; That speed limit thing is kind of a chicken and egg conversation. They do a speed study of a posted road, so people generally drive the limit. Kind of doesn't make sense. They should almost pull down the speed limit signs and then study it.   more ›

Residents Get Last Chance To Chime In On Woodbury Drive Project

The Woodbury City Council will be asked for its approval of the roadway expansion project this May.

Washington County officials say they understand the concerns residents have regarding the coming Woodbury Drive expansion project. But at the same time, “we’ve never been able to do what we’re doing here,” said Wayne Sandberg, county engineer, who went on to cite the steps taken to satisfy those concerns while crafting a roadway that will serve the area decades into the future. Safety and accessibility are key to the project, which has faced challenges due to the highway’s narrow right-of-way, he said.       County outlines plans to expand Woodbury Drive An open house about the project was held at the Eagle Valley Golf Course clubhouse on Thursday, the last chance for residents to voice their thoughts about the project before the Woodbury …

They are going to do a lot of planting and conduct a speed study there Cindy. But the council did express concerns about a chicken/egg situation—they figure people will just drive what's posted. I know Antrim has been a concern, but the roundabouts are supposed to provide gaps for motorists. Not sure about peds there.   more ›

‘Hybrid’ Roundabouts Planned For Woodbury Drive Project

Meanwhile, Councilman Paul Rebholz sounds off with his concerns about the project, which would expand County 19 from two lanes to four from Park Crossing south to Saint Ambrose Church.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday took a detailed look at plans for the coming Woodbury Drive expansion, which include “hybrid” roundabouts at Lake Drive and Bailey Road. The roundabouts feature two lanes in each direction for north-south traffic and one lane in each direction for east-west vehicles. (See the image with this story.) There are similar roundabouts near the Richfield Target, City Engineer Klayton Eckles said, and they have worked well there. The roundabouts would reduce fender-benders and ease pedestrian crossing of Woodbury Drive, he said. The area’s topography does not allow for a pedestrian underpass like the roundabout Radio Drive and Bailey Road, City Administrator Clint Gridley said. At some point the hybrid …

County Outlines Plans To Expand Woodbury Drive

Residents express concerns about how the new lanes and pedestrian paths will fit in the narrow right-of-way.

“Every foot counts.” That’s the motto for a Washington County project that will expand Woodbury Drive from two lanes to four from St. Ambrose Church north to Park Crossing. But squeezing in those lanes—along with pedestrian and bike paths on both sides of the road—has proved challenging, as the area has a narrow right-of-way. At Lake Middle School last week, Washington County officials held a public meeting about the project, which should provide a roadway that “will manage that traffic 20 to 30 years from now,” County Engineer Wayne Sandberg said. Residents who live near the project area say they’re concerned about the speed limit and an increase in noise, along with the safety of motorists as well as the bikers and walkers who would use …
