‘Huge Change’ for Woodbury’s Tropical Ballroom

The dance studio will close soon as owners Tricia and James Wood begin giving lessons completely off-site.

After Sunday, Woodbury’s Tropical Ballroom will close its dance studio and offer lessons off-site. “Mobile completely,” said Tricia Wood, who co-owns the studio with her husband James. “And we’re super excited.” Customers have increasingly requested lessons elsewhere, Wood said, and it made financial and logistical sense to close the Valley Creek Mall studio. “Over the next three or three and a half months, we’re booked solid, but it’s all off-site,” she said. “Why have a studio when we’re never in it?” The decision came about quickly, Wood said, “and we’re going with it.” Tropical Ballroom has been in Woodbury for the past four and half years and was named the 2011 Business of the Year by the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce. Wood said the …

Angela's Angle

Obsessed with Gangnam Style in Woodbury

Gangnam style is putting on like you're wealthy when in reality, your paycheck is just shy of funding your leased Mercedes. It’s all about appearances. Sound familiar?

I was convinced at age 10 that all possible dance moves had been invented. “What else could anyone possibly think up?” I asked. Then Michael Jackson did the moonwalk. Then there was break dancing, line dancing, vogue, the electric slide, poppin’, krumping and the Cupid shuffle. There’s been no end to the amount of jiggle and jive flashes in the proverbial pan. But have any of these momentary amusements been as amazing as Gangnam Style? I’d first caught glimpses of these silly dance moves on commercials for morning television programs. “Can’t be cool if it’s on the Today Show,” I thought. Out of curiosity, I clicked through YouTube in search of this supposedly hot trend. What I found was a music video that brought a Cheshire cat smile to my…

New Dance Studio Opens In Woodbury

Continuing a family tradition, Legacy Dance Studio gets hip in Woodbury.

The Woodbury Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for one of its newest members, Legacy Dance Studio of Woodbury. The studio opened Nov. 15, 2011, and business has been brisk so far, said Scott Drikakis, who owns Legacy Dance Studio with his wife Angie. “We’re definitely signing up new kids each week,” he said. “It’s been great.” The family has been in the dance studio business for some time, Drikakis said, starting when his mother worked at a Plymouth studio years ago. In 1998 she opened Legacy Dance Studio in Oakdale. Drikakis, a teacher Legacy Dance, said the business employs four other instructors and offers competition hip-hop dancing. The studio also offers tap, jazz and ballet. It being next door to a …

Woodbury High School Hits Broadway

The annual spring show, “Give My Regards to Broadway,” will run May 24-26.

Woodbury High School students took the stage for the first time Tuesday as they continued preparations for their spring show, “Give My Regards to Broadway.” Daryl Timmer, director of choirs at WHS, said this is his 10th year organizing the show, which is molded to fit the “personalities” of the students. Solo and group acts—which had to audition before teachers who served as judges—will take the stage along with the choirs. The songs come from a wide array of Broadway musicals, Timmer said. The students then write a script to adapt to the songs. The entire production is student-driven, from the set design and construction to costumes, he said. Alyssa Schorr, a 2004 Woodbury graduate, is serving as choreographer. There are a lot more …
