Woodbury Elementary students would attend class at the Crosswinds Arts and Science School building next fall if District 833 is able to acquire the facility. Students in the district’s Spanish immersion program, Nuevas Fronteras, would attend school at the Woodbury Elementary building. South Washington County Schools on Wednesday posted a notice on its website about the plan. However, Crosswinds Arts and Science School could be turned over to the Perpich Center for Arts Education if the Golden Valley-based group is able to secure funding from the Legislature by April 1. Residents will have the chance to give their feedback on the latest budget options.
South Washington County Schools officials will present 2013-14 budget information at three upcoming public meetings. The meetings are set for: The meetings will include a presentation and an opportunity for residents to comment on each of the proposed budget options. All meetings will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. in the schools' media centers. More information on the process is available on the district’s website. (Budget options will be available on the page starting Feb. 22.) District 833 educators Matt Karasek and Jennifer Thorne are among the candidates for Education Minnesota’s 2013 Teacher of the Year award. Karasek, a teacher at East Ridge High School, and Thorne, a teacher at Middleton Elementary, are among 135 up for the honor. It’s the largest field of candidates since 2005, according to a release from Education Minnesota. The frigid temperatures caused 15 buses to experience “fuel gelling,” according to South Washington County Schools.
The bitter cold that descended on Woodbury and the state caused issues for District 833 buses on Tuesday morning. Fifteen buses experienced “fuel gelling,” which caused them to stall after they left for their regular runs, according to a notice from South Washington County Schools. (Transportation officials were out on Monday and early Tuesday ensuring the buses would start.) The district sent out replacement buses, and aside from some slightly late arrivals at middle schools, the rest were expected to get students to school on time for the most part, according to the district. South Washington County Schools will hold a series of upcoming meetings—and post a survey on its website—as it looks for feedback on services amid budget constraints. “The Service Level Process being developed, and soon to be presented, is intended to support improved alignment of what we do and what we provide for students to the financial resources over time,” reads a release from the district. “All District 833 parents and residents are invited and encouraged to attend the upcoming conversations regarding the alignment of services to the budget.” The meetings with residents will outline district services and how South Washington County Schools plans to “better align our financial resources,” the release says. South Washington County Schools officials are continually apprised of new development plans in area cities.
As Woodbury prepares for 6,000 new homes in the Phase 2 area of the city over the next decade, District 833 officials are keeping an eye on future attendance needs. Mike Vogel, assistant to the superintendent for operations, said South Washington County Schools officials meet regularly with Woodbury and Cottage Grove leaders about future growth. Woodbury’s Phase 2 is near East Ridge High School, but Vogel said he doesn’t expect the new development will have much of an impact at the high school in the near term. “Most families don’t move when their kids are at that age,” he said. The South Washington County School Board on Friday chose Kathleen McElwee-Stevens as its newest member. McElwee-Stevens, who has worked as a paraprofessional at Newport Elementary School since 2003, will serve until the election next fall. She will be sworn in on Thursday, Jan. 10. The Newport resident fills the position vacated by Board Chair Leslee Boyd, who in October 2012 announced her resignation and plans to move out of state.
