District to Implement New Security Protocol at Six Schools

Greeters will be in place to monitor visitors at newer elementary schools in District 833.

The effects of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., are still being felt in District 833. Six of the newer elementary schools in the district will soon have greeters at the doors to monitor visitors, said Barb Brown, communications director for South Washington County Schools. The six are newer schools that don’t have checkpoints in place that came with previous HVAC updates, Brown said. Visitors come into an open area when they enter the schools. “That has been a concern,” Brown said. Officials are determining whether the person will be an existing staffer or a new hire. The greeters will be in place when school resumes Jan. 2 following the winter break, Brown said. “It’s a short-term solution,” she said. The district is looking at …

District 833 Responds to Questions on School Safety, Security

The shootings in Newtown, Conn., prompted South Washington County Schools to review its safety and security procedures, the district announced last week. There was an additional police presence at many schools in Woodbury on Monday. On Tuesday, Superintendent Keith Jacobus sent out the following note: Dear Families, We continue to join school districts across the nation struggling with the best way to support our students, staff and families, as we work through the tragedy that continues to unfold in Connecticut. Updated: Sandy Hook Shooting Prompts Increased Police Presence at Woodbury Schools

Lee Vague, Woodbury Public Safety chief, reached out to area schools to ask what could be done in the wake of the massacre in Connecticut.

Woodbury parents might have noticed police standing outside their child’s school Monday morning. Public Safety Chief Lee Vague reached out to local public and private schools following the shooting in Newtown, Conn., to ask what police here could do, said Michelle Okada, police spokeswoman. The additional police presence was meant to “help families and kids feel safe as they transition back from a tragic event,” Okada said. Police were set to monitor things at the start and end of the school day, she said. One or two officers were assigned to each school. There is no definite timeframe for how long officers will be stationed at the schools, and there will be additional dialogue between police and school officials this week, Okada said. …

Connecticut School Shooting: District 833 to Review Safety and Security Practices

South Washington County Schools posted a note on its website Friday expressing sympathy for the victims.

Following the shooting at a school on the East Coast that left 27 people dead as of Friday afternoon, officials in South Washington County Schools expressed their condolences and said the district would “continue review of our safety and security practices to determine if they need to be adapted or strengthened.” From a post on the South Washington County Schools’ website: Several schools have received calls from parents regarding today’s school tragedy in Connecticut. How Are Those Italian Dunkers? Taste Test for Woodbury’s Red Rock Elementary

Students gave their feedback on whole-grain dunkers Wednesday as the district continues to implement changes associated with new federal guidelines for school lunches.

As South Washington County Schools carries out changes to adhere to new federal guidelines for school lunches, students at Red Rock Elementary on Wednesday got to give their feedback on new whole-grain Italian dunkers. Schwan’s brought its pizza boats to the Woodbury school, and other taste testing sessions will likely be held at other schools before a vendor is chosen, said Kristine Iturrino, cook manager at Red Rock. “They really had fun with it,” she said of the students, who for the most part liked the offering. “And they really appreciate that they have a say.” One hundred percent of grains served in District 833 will be whole grain by the 2014-15 school year. District 833: Fourteen Apply for School Board Spot

Chair Leslee Boyd is stepping down from the South Washington County School Board.

District 833 saw 14 people apply for the school board position current Chair Leslee Boyd will vacate at the end of the calendar year. Boyd is planning to move out of state. See: School Board Chair Leslee Boyd Resigns According to a release from South Washington County Schools, the 14 people are: “With 14 individuals expressing interest, the School Board will now determine how to screen the applicants,” reads the release. “Once known, the district will release the information regarding when the interviews will take place. The board will appoint someone to replace departing Chair Leslee Boyd.

South Washington County Schools on Friday outlined the checkpoints coming up as the district looks to replace School Board Chair Leslee Boyd.  Boyd last month announced her resignation from the District 833 School Board. District 833 to Accept Applications for New School Board Member

Current Chair Leslee Boyd announced her resignation on Thursday.

In the wake of District 833 School Board Chair Leslee Boyd’s resignation, South Washington County Schools will look for a replacement member to assume the role until the 2013 election. The South Washington County School Board will appoint a new person to the seven-member body. Following interviews (dates have not been set), the board is expected to make the appointment at its Dec. 20 meeting. District 833 is accepting applications for the position, which will be vacated at the end of the calendar year.

The husband of current District 833 School Board Chair Leslee Boyd has taken a job in Oklahoma City, prompting her resignation from the board. “If it wasn’t for that, I would certainly stay on the board,” she told Patch. “Because I love what I do.” The announcement about her resignation came during Thursday’s board meeting; it will become effective Dec. 31, according to a release from the district. It's too bad when people make judgements based on limited information. As an active school volunteer at both the district and building level I can tell you that a very large majority of the principals and administrators in our district would say that the new superintendent is better for our district and can site specific examples of improvement. Brief: Car Rear-Ends District 833 School Bus

The incident happened near Military Road and Jamaica Avenue on Monday afternoon.

No one was injured Monday after a car crashed into the back of a District 833 school bus. The incident happened just before 3:40 p.m. Monday near Military Road and Jamaica Avenue, a Cottage Grove officer told Patch. Six students were being transported to either a practice or a game, according to Barb Brown, director of communications for South Washington County Schools.
