The long golf season and rate changes spurred the successful season at the city’s municipal course.
In terms of gross revenue, Eagle Valley Golf Course had its best year ever in 2012. The Woodbury City Council last week heard the annual review for the municipal course, which has undertaken operational changes and enhanced marketing efforts to improve its finances. There was an extra month or so of the golf season last year, said Dan Moris, head pro. The warm weather last spring got people out early and excited about golf throughout the year, he said. But changes to the fee structure, including taking Fridays off the weekend rate, along with a $20 reduction for the course’s Royal Club, were also factors, Moris said. A group of investors plans to make an offer on Woodbury’s Eagle Valley Golf Course. “Probably this spring,” said Woodbury resident Chris Soukup, a business consultant, speaking for the group. The City Council recently approved buying 55 new golf carts for the municipal course.
The Woodbury City Council on Nov. 14 moved ahead with the purchase of 55 new golf carts (and one beverage cart) for the Eagle Valley Golf Course. But it didn’t come without opposition—Councilman Christopher Burns voted against the item, which he had pulled from the consent agenda. The municipal course has been under the eye of the city council as it works to keep up with Eagle Valley’s debt service and capital improvements. The city council got an update on the course during its recent budget workshop.
Woodbury has been looking to improve the financial standing of the city-owned Eagle Valley Golf Course. And, like a 9 iron from the fairway, things are looking up, for this summer, at least. Revenue at the course was up 34 percent over 2011 through Aug. 15, while rounds increased 37 percent, officials said during a recent Woodbury City Council budget workshop. Membership in the course’s Royal Club was also up by more than 250 over last year’s numbers. Several factors contributed to the uptick in rounds, according to the head golf pro.
Whether it was the early start to the golf season, a revamped rate structure or better weather, Eagle Valley Golf Course in Woodbury had its best May since 2004. Dan Moris, head golf pro at Eagle Valley, said there were several factors that led to the early-season success at the city’s municipal course. The nice weather to start the season prompted the course to open earlier than usual, and golfers likely got into the habit of playing sooner, he said. “They do end up playing a bit more because of that,” Moris said. Still, he noted that there were other warm springs between 2004 and 2012, and a few weekend days were cut short this May due to rain. A Woodbury officer used a “slim jim” to get into the resident’s car and use the garage door opener to gain access to the home.
A resident at the 2800 block of Eagle Valley Drive accidentally got locked out of her home Wednesday morning during a stovetop fire. A Woodbury police officer used a “slim jim” to access the resident’s vehicle, which was parked on the street, and officials used the garage-door opener to let firefighters into the home, said Fire Chief Todd Johnson. Smoke had built up inside the house and the resident went outside and the door locked behind her, Johnson said. No one was injured and there was little damage to the home, he said.
