Woodbury’s Eagle Valley Golf Course Had Best Year Ever in 2012

The long golf season and rate changes spurred the successful season at the city’s municipal course.

In terms of gross revenue, Eagle Valley Golf Course had its best year ever in 2012. The Woodbury City Council last week heard the annual review for the municipal course, which has undertaken operational changes and enhanced marketing efforts to improve its finances. There was an extra month or so of the golf season last year, said Dan Moris, head pro. The warm weather last spring got people out early and excited about golf throughout the year, he said. But changes to the fee structure, including taking Fridays off the weekend rate, along with a $20 reduction for the course’s Royal Club, were also factors, Moris said. The course’s first full season was in 1999 after opening for half a season a year earlier. Councilman Paul Rebholz said the …

Splash Pad Discussion on Agenda for Woodbury City Council Meeting

The council meets for a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and is also set to hear annual reviews for the Eagle Valley Golf Course and Bielenberg Sports Center.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday is set to once again take up its discussion of the possibility of a splash pad at the Bielenberg Sports Center. The city in February examined the proposal for a splash pad, which received mixed reviews from the council. Related: Splash Pad at Bielenberg Gets Lukewarm Reception from Woodbury City Council A splash pad is being considered as the city moves forward with its plans for a $21.8 million upgrade for the sports center, which include a new permanent field house, two-story lobby connecting the new facility and existing arenas, and an outdoor pleasure rink. It will be built without a tax increase. Demolition work is set to begin early next month. There is a $500,000 allowance for a splash pad in …

Group Plans to Offer Woodbury $1.7 Million for Eagle Valley Golf Course

The course, which had been struggling along with the rest of the golf industry, had a strong 2012 season.

A group of investors plans to make an offer on Woodbury’s Eagle Valley Golf Course. “Probably this spring,” said Woodbury resident Chris Soukup, a business consultant, speaking for the group. The offer will be in the $1.7 million to $1.8 million range, he said. “The worst they could do is say no,” said Soukup, who last spring expressed interest in the course.        Related: Group Interested in Buying Eagle Valley Golf Course For Councilman Paul Rebholz, the city already went through a “thorough, thoughtful” process to develop a three-year plan to improve the financial standing of the municipal golf course, which had seen decreasing rounds along with the rest of the industry. “Right now, the city’s plan with Eagle Valley is to work the …

Also, somebody asked me on Twitter what would be done with the course. (They plan to keep it a golf course.) There are covenants in place on the land that force it to remain a golf course or parkland for the next several years, 15 or something. I can't remember exactly how long they're in place.   more ›

Woodbury Councilman Wary of Capital Purchase for Eagle Valley Golf Course

The City Council recently approved buying 55 new golf carts for the municipal course.

The Woodbury City Council on Nov. 14 moved ahead with the purchase of 55 new golf carts (and one beverage cart) for the Eagle Valley Golf Course.  But it didn’t come without opposition—Councilman Christopher Burns voted against the item, which he had pulled from the consent agenda. The municipal course has been under the eye of the city council as it works to keep up with Eagle Valley’s debt service and capital improvements.  Burns noted that the city plans to check back on the course in three years and questioned if Woodbury should have looked at leasing carts instead of buying them outright.         Related: Group Interested in Buying Eagle Valley Golf Course The cost of the carts, with trade-ins of old ones included, is estimated at $…

Driving Toward Success? Woodbury’s Eagle Valley Golf Course

The city council got an update on the course during its recent budget workshop.

Woodbury has been looking to improve the financial standing of the city-owned Eagle Valley Golf Course. And, like a 9 iron from the fairway, things are looking up, for this summer, at least. Revenue at the course was up 34 percent over 2011 through Aug. 15, while rounds increased 37 percent, officials said during a recent Woodbury City Council budget workshop. Membership in the course’s Royal Club was also up by more than 250 over last year’s numbers. One of the main factors for the uptick was a change in the rate structure at Eagle Valley, according to Community Development Director Dwight Picha. Excellent spring weather also contributed to the gains, head pro Dan Moris said. Many people likely didn’t obtain Royal Club membership last …

Woodbury’s Eagle Valley Golf Course Enjoys Best May Since 2004

Several factors contributed to the uptick in rounds, according to the head golf pro.

Whether it was the early start to the golf season, a revamped rate structure or better weather, Eagle Valley Golf Course in Woodbury had its best May since 2004. Dan Moris, head golf pro at Eagle Valley, said there were several factors that led to the early-season success at the city’s municipal course. The nice weather to start the season prompted the course to open earlier than usual, and golfers likely got into the habit of playing sooner, he said. “They do end up playing a bit more because of that,” Moris said. Still, he noted that there were other warm springs between 2004 and 2012, and a few weekend days were cut short this May due to rain. Meanwhile, the Royal Club at Eagle Valley—which gives members reduced rates and other benefits…

Resident Locked Out of Home During Fire Near Eagle Valley

A Woodbury officer used a “slim jim” to get into the resident’s car and use the garage door opener to gain access to the home.

A resident at the 2800 block of Eagle Valley Drive accidentally got locked out of her home Wednesday morning during a stovetop fire. A Woodbury police officer used a “slim jim” to access the resident’s vehicle, which was parked on the street, and officials used the garage-door opener to let firefighters into the home, said Fire Chief Todd Johnson. Smoke had built up inside the house and the resident went outside and the door locked behind her, Johnson said. No one was injured and there was little damage to the home, he said. Firefighters had cleared the scene by about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.   Like us on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up for our newsletter

Group Interested in Buying Eagle Valley Golf Course

The city has a three-year plan to improve the municipal course, but a Woodbury man says a private group could run it better.

Could the Eagle Valley Golf Course have a new owner? Woodbury resident Chris Soukup says he has a “half-assembled” group that has been looking at buying a course in the area. He attended Wednesday night's Woodbury City Council meeting to express his interest in buying the Eagle Valley Golf Course. He told Patch that Woodbury's municipal course has been “mismanaged” and a private group would have a better shot at making Eagle Valley successful. “It could do very well,” said Soukup, a business consultant. A purchase wouldn’t happen anytime soon. Councilman Paul Rebholz on Wednesday reported findings from the Eagle Valley Golf Course Task Force, which outlined a three-year plan for turning around the financial standing of the course. “I think…

Council to Examine Past, Future of Bielenberg Sports Center

The Woodbury City Council is also set to review the Eagle Valley Golf Course during Wednesday night’s workshop.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday is set to discuss the 2011 happenings at the Bielenberg Sports Center while also looking ahead to the replacement of its dome. The city on Friday unveiled preliminary drawings for the new $15.5 million structure set to replace the bubble, which opened in the fall of 1995. Work on the project could begin a soon as the spring of 2013. On the docket for Wednesday’s council workshop, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, is a review of 2011 operations at Bielenberg, including rental hours, its geothermal heating and cooling system (it hasn’t provided the expected savings) and highlights of the past year’s projects. Liquor Licenses Approved for Woody’s, Eagle Valley Golf Course

Meanwhile, the Woodbury City Council on Wednesday also gave the go-ahead for another phase of development at Dancing Waters.

With no discussion Wednesday night, the Woodbury City Council approved liquor licenses for Woody’s Roadhouse and Eagle Valley Golf Course. Woody’s Roadhouse is the new restaurant coming in at the former Throwbacks Grille and Bar. It's set to reopen as Woody's later this month. Woody’s officials have said that the restaurant will have a totally different concept. “In this day and age, entertainment venues just don’t survive,” General Manager David Harvey told Patch. “We’re no longer going to be an entertainment venue that serves food, we’re going to be a restaurant with entertainment in the evenings.” Meanwhile, the city’s municipal golf course will now be able to serve booze. It formerly served only strong beer and wine. The move to …
