‘The Front Door’ for the New Bielenberg Sports Center

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday examined the exterior plans for the expansion project.

A multi-functional plaza is in the works for the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. “It’s really the front door,” said John Slack, landscape architect with Stantec Consulting, who showed the Woodbury City Council drawings of the latest plans during a workshop Wednesday. The area would include trees, seating areas, bike racks and outlets for vendors during events. The plaza was one of several exterior aspects of the project discussed Wednesday. The city plans to raze the Bielenberg Sports Center’s dome this April and begin construction on a new $21.8 million field house and two-story lobby linking the facility with the existing arenas. Council members seemed generally to favor the plans for the plaza, though Councilman Paul Rebholz…

Outdoor Movies in Woodbury? Update on Pleasure Rink for Bielenberg Sports Center Expansion

The Woodbury City Council took a comprehensive look at plans for the exterior of the field house and lobby Wednesday.

A fire pit, colored lights and the potential to show outdoor movies on a wall of the two-story lobby were among the highlights of a presentation on the planned pleasure rink for the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion. “We’re trying to create a cool environment,” City Administrator Clint Gridley said. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday examined drawings for the exterior of the facility, a $21.8 million structure that will replace the dome and feature a lobby that links the new field house and existing ice arenas. The outdoor rink would be constructed in a way that it could eventually be enclosed, said John Slack, a landscape architect with Santec Consulting. Splash Pad at Bielenberg Gets Lukewarm Reception from Woodbury City Council

The council went over several aspects of the exterior of the planned field house and lobby during a workshop Wednesday night.

A splash pad was discussed as part of a comprehensive look at the exterior for the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project during a Woodbury City Council workshop Wednesday night. While most aspects of the work—the plaza, outdoor rink and playground for kids of all abilities—were received favorably, the council expressed some concerns about the water feature. The splash pad plans, as detailed by Stantec landscape architect John Slack, call for two areas, one for toddlers and another for older children and adults. It would be located north of the Madison’s Place playground. Councilwoman Julie Ohs has long advocated for the splash pad, saying Wednesday it would make the new facility “more accessible, more inclusive.” “That’s exactly what …

Relax: I greatly appreciate your post. We really do need to call out our leaders when they make ridiculous comments like that. I guess our expectations for our leaders have lowered to the level where we are longer surprised to hear such comments from one of them. If he has a good arguments against this idea, he should be able to confidently and thoughtfully present them on their merit without …   more ›

“This process has been extensive.” So said City Administrator Clint Gridley on Wednesday before the Woodbury City Council approved the latest round of measures that move the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project forward. The council approved the site plan, authorized Kraus-Anderson to solicit bids for the work and approved bond sales to fund the $21.8 million project, which will be completed without a tax increase. The expected opening date for the new facility—which also includes a new two-story lobby and outdoor rink—is February or March 2014. Major Decisions on Bielenberg Sports Center Expansion: Woodbury Council Preview

The Woodbury City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.

Woodbury on Wednesday could take a big step toward a new Bielenberg Sports Center. Or three, to be exact. The City Council is set to consider three measures that would move the $21.8 million project forward. The city plans to raze the aging dome this April and start construction on a new field house and lobby. Specifically, the council is expected to vote on: The city over the past several months has refined its plans for the 120,054-square-foot expansion project, which will not require the city to raise taxes. The project also includes $500,000 in improvements to the two existing rinks, along with a third sheet of outdoor ice geared toward pleasure skating. A two-story lobby and new concession area is also part of the plans. The opening …

Woodbury Firm on Third Ice Sheet for Bielenberg Sports Center Expansion

Hockey parents urge city to consider enclosing outdoor rink.

City officials were clear: there’s not enough demand for ice time to warrant a third enclosed rink at the Bielenberg Sports Center. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday got the latest updates on the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. Plans call for a permanent field house to replace the aging dome and an outdoor ice sheet reserved for leisure skating, along with an updated lobby and other improvements. But much of the discussion Wednesday focused on the needs of Woodbury’s youth hockey community—some saying the groups are shouldering an undue burden for the facility’s operating costs and others urging the city to have an enclosed ice sheet instead of an outdoor rink for leisure skating. The latest estimates put the project at $…

With Urban Village on the Horizon, Woodbury OK's Radio Drive Expansion Plans

Washington County officials also detailed why the Radio Drive-Hargis Parkway intersection will have a signal instead of a roundabout.

As Woodbury prepares for a new mixed-use development at the southwest corner of Radio Drive and Bailey Road, the City Council on Wednesday approved plans for roadway expansion in the area. Radio Drive will be expanded from two lanes to four from Bailey Road to Hargis Parkway, and a third pedestrian underpass will be installed near the Radio-Bailey intersection. (County staff is busy with other projects, so Woodbury is acting as the lead agency for the roadwork.) Bielenberg Gardens, which calls for retail, commercial and residential growth across 200 acres at the site, “is really driving this project,” City Engineer Klayton Eckles said. The developer wants to move forward with the work, and Woodbury is hoping to begin construction next May …

The New Addition at Angelina’s Kitchen in Woodbury

A wine bar is also planned at the Woodbury restaurant.

This summer, Angelina’s Kitchen announced plans to combine the kitchen and café. On Friday, Oct. 5, Angelina’s Kitchen Italian Bistro and Catering opened up its new space, which features full table service and more seating. “It’s the same food, just in a nicer atmosphere,” owner Angela Verrastro told Patch on Wednesday.       Related: Big Plans in Store for Angelina’s Kitchen in Woodbury Many people didn’t realize Angelina’s Kitchen offers a full menu, she said, and there are weekly specials—lobster ravioli and beef stroganoff, for example—along with breakfast available Friday through Sunday.
