Hey Woodbury: Don’t Forget Dear Old Dad

Got any tips for the best grill to buy for hubby?

Father’s Day is this Sunday. What cha gonna do? It seems dear old dad doesn’t get near the attention as mom when it comes to these types of Hallmark holidays. Restaurants aren’t as crowded. Flower shops, jewelry stores and that silly PajamaGram commercial don’t get as much attention from desperate shoppers hoping to please a parent with just the right gift. We flip dad a tie or a tool and call it good. “Unfair!” I say. Especially in light of last year’s Time magazine report that indicates men are feeling more pressure than ever to be breadwinners as well as involved fathers. This year, my husband, the father of my children, who never, I repeat, never cooks, but shares equally in all parenting and other household chores, wants a new …

St. Michael Man Gives Father the Gift of Life

A few weeks before Father's Day, Mickey Hansen's adopted son sacrificed his kidney, saving his life.

In honor of Father's Day, we bring you this story from St. Michael Patch. In 1975, Lucas Hansen was the first child in the world to be adopted by a woman with a kidney transplant. It was not an easy path for Mary and Mickey Hansen, of rural Buffalo, Minn. After some convincing arguments from Mary’s doctors, and official intervention by then Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, on Dec. 21, 1974, the same agency that had previously told them they couldn’t adopt told the couple they had a baby boy coming from Korea. Things were great, until time took its toll on Mary's kidneys. Finally, when he was …

Attention: Woodbury Grads And Dads

Here are a few ideas for those upcoming benchmarks: graduation and Father’s Day.

June is marked by cruising through the grad party circuit and shopping for the perfect gift. Graduation parties are great because I don’t have to cook. My family can hoover up some hot dish, salads and bars, congratulate grads with a slap on the back, then leave behind a gift or a card in recognition of their accomplishment. You may ask: What should I get a graduate? We typically give money inside a card. If I have several grad parties on the calendar, I’ll buy a box of cards. That’s a little more cost effective and then I’m not running around at the last second searching for a forgotten card. The closer we are to the graduate, the more money we give. The Miss Manners Guide For the Turn of the Millennium says, “Guests are under no …
