Since February 2012, the city’s Public Safety Department has trained more than 7,000 people in hands-only CPR.
The Woodbury Public Safety Department will celebrate its Take Heart Woodbury campaign later this month. The department last February announced an ambitious goal of training 7,000 people in hands-only CPR, and reached it last month. The public is invited to the celebration, set for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the department’s headquarters on Radio Drive. The event, which will be held in the Public Safety Education Room, will include a brief ceremony. “The purpose is to recognize everyone who helped the city reach its goal of training 10 percent of the population so they are better prepared to act in case of a sudden cardiac emergency,” reads a release from the department. “The Take Heart Woodbury initiative started in March of last year …

A big boost from Woodbury Days has pushed the city’s goal to train 7,000 people in hands-only CPR past the halfway point. City Administrator Clint Gridley at the Sept. 12 Woodbury City Council meeting reported that 713 people were trained during the three-day festival. Following Woodbury Days, 3,749 people had been trained since the city began its Take Heart Woodbury campaign. And with additional sessions held over the past weekend and more scheduled in the coming weeks, Woodbury officials believe they will be able to hit the goal. “Hands-only” refers to CPR that is done without mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It is a two-step technique that involves calling 911 and pushing hard and fast in the middle of the victim's chest until help arrives…
