The Woodbury school is hosting the fair for the first time this year.
There are more than 200 students at East Ridge High School enrolled in special-needs programs. And the decisions facing those who are graduating this spring are as varied as the students themselves. East Ridge High School for the first time this year will hold a “Transition Fair,” giving students and their parents the chance to hear from more than 40 vendors on everything from post-secondary education to housing options and job opportunities, said Rob Weberg, special education teacher at the Woodbury school. “There’s been a real need for it,” he said. The idea is to help connect special-needs students with community resources as they prepare for life after high school, Weberg said. The event is set for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at…

Saint Therese plans to build a campus adjacent to Bielenberg Gardens.
About a month and a half after plans for a new grocery store were announced for a new Woodbury development, a senior-housing group says it will break ground on a facility adjacent to the urban village this fall. Saint Therese plans to build a new campus near the urban village, called Bielenberg Gardens, located at the southwest corner of Radio Drive and Bailey Road in Woodbury, according to a Tuesday news release. “Saint Therese is delighted to be expanding in the east metro,” President & CEO Barbara Rode said in a statement. “Woodbury is a progressive city supported by innovative leaders seeking the best options for their aging population. We look forward to serving all Woodbury and east metro area seniors and their families as they …

Roger Green, chair of the city’s Economic Development Commission, presented the group’s 2012 update at last week’s Woodbury City Council meeting.
The lowest unemployment rate since 2008. The biggest increase in housing starts since 2007. The lowest number of foreclosures since 2006. Roger Green, chair of the Woodbury Economic Development Commission, gave the group’s annual report at last week’s City Council meeting. The upshot? The city’s economy is on the upswing. “Things are starting to turn the corner,” said Green, who has been a member of the commission for more than 10 years. The biggest growth in the employment sector—where Woodbury’s unemployment is 1.2 percentage points better than Washington County’s (and 3.9 better than the national number)—was in the health care and education fields, Green said. Commercial investment was also up in 2012—155 businesses secured permits for …

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday approved several measures that move the Autumn Ridge development forward.
Mike Rygh, of Custom One Homes, says most houses in a new Woodbury development will be in the $800,000 to $900,000 range. Some custom-built Autumn Ridge homes could cost much more. “Who knows how crazy somebody wants to go,” Rygh said, adding that pools, hobby farm-like outbuildings and extensive “man caves” would be likely amenities in the new homes. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved three measures that move the Autumn Ridge development forward. Plans call for 20 homes to be built on a 61-acre parcel at the southwest corner of Radio Drive and Military Road, north of Glen Road. It’s currently farmland. Mary Giuliani Stephens gave the speech during a Woodbury Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week.
From a $21 million plan for the Bielenberg Sports Center to presiding over a duck vs. rooster election at a local preschool, Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens went over some of the highlights during her second year leading the city at a recent Woodbury Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Stephens gave the 2012 State of the City address in front of dozens of local business leaders at the Eagle Valley Golf Course clubhouse on Friday, Nov. 30. She talked about the city’s resiliency in the housing market, plans for 6,000 new homes and a walkable urban village, the strength of Woodbury’s job market… and the recent Money Magazine recognition. “We did not achieve this by accident,” the mayor said. The city has reached out to its business community through …

The City Council on Wednesday approved the measure.
With a dwindling lot inventory and renewed interest from developers, Woodbury has decided it will open up a portion of Phase 2 for development. The city will now allow developers to submit applications for new housing in sub-Phase 2A, under a measure the Woodbury City Council approved during Wednesday night’s meeting. The city plans to open up Phase 2 (see map) in stages as part of a 10-year growth strategy, said Community Development Director Dwight Picha. The city expects 6,000 homes to be built in Phase 2 over the next decade. Interest in the site from developers has “increased significantly,” Picha said, and Woodbury has one of the lowest lot inventories in the Twin Cities. Typically, cities want a lot inventory of about 24 to 32-36 …

City officials recently took a tour of all that’s new in Woodbury, and checked out sites for future development.
During a two-hour bus tour last week, city officials got a chance to check out the latest developments—and sites for future homes and businesses—in Woodbury. Most of it, of course, had already come across the desk of Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens. “But it’s nice to go out and get that bigger perspective,” she said. Stephens has gone on the tour every year since she was a councilmember, and she said it’s a good chance to see how the city has grown each year and envision how it will look in the future. Below is the list of stops, with information about each provided by city staff. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday informally agreed to move ahead with new development in a portion of the Phase 2 area of the city.
Realtors say homes are selling more quickly. The city’s existing lot inventory is shrinking. Building permits are up dramatically. Those were a few of the factors that led Woodbury City Council members to informally agree that the city should allow new development near in the Phase 2 area near East Ridge High School. (See map.) The city January opted to defer opening up that area for new housing, but Councilwoman Julie Ohs on Wednesday said the timing looks good. “It kind of all fell together and it’s time to move forward,” she said. The move—which will have to be formally adopted at a later date—sparked a buzz in the hallway from those in the development community who attended Wednesday's council workshop. Several have spoken at previous …
