An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Editor's Note: With Bachmann's presidential campaign ended, the Bachmann Beat will continue to run daily through the end of the week before switching to a Monday-only schedule. With her campaign ended after a resounding defeat in the Iowa caucuses, sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann is getting the post-mortem treatment from the press, with media outlets analyzing what went wrong and why. The Fiscal Times wrote that her summer polling lead dwindled due to the entrance of Rick Perry into the race and the September dissipation of her campaign staff. Her poll numbers dropped from the controversy that arose after she called the HPV vaccine “potentially a very dangerous drug.” She also faced scrutiny for her geographical and foreign …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
In advance of the Jan. 3 Iowa caucus, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is launching a television, radio and online ad campaign that features Iowa residents talking about why they support Bachmann. “She stands up for what she believes in. She listens to what the American people say,” says one woman in an ad. In Newton, Iowa, she filmed a Christmas-themed ad. Bachmann is polling at 7.4 percent of likely caucus-goers, according to a Dec. 21 poll. Meanwhile, Bachmann spoke negatively about the payroll tax cut extension deal brokered between President Obama and congressional Republicans. “It was a mistake a year ago, and it’s a mistake today,” she said. “We all know that the federal government’s broke, so…

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
A group of conservative Christians in Iowa started pounding the pavement Tuesday in an effort to get Republicans to caucus for “biblically qualified” sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann on Jan. 3. “She is capable. She is trustworthy. She fears God, and she hates dishonest gain,” former state Rep. Danny Carroll of Grinnell, Iowa, said Tuesday at a news conference attended by the Sioux City Journal. “Frankly, we're looking to shake things up a little bit.” In South Carolina, Bachmann has grown her Tea Party coalition to more than 50 members. “I once was a strong Perry supporter. Now, as we move closer to the election, I see that Michele Bachmann’s consistent conservative record is what our country needs. …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Yesterday, during a forum in Pella, Iowa, sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said she opposed ethanol subsidies. Bachmann argued energy subsidies in general wouldn't be necessary if the federal government were to reduce regulatory burdens. When asked if that included federal subsidies for ethanol, she replied, "That includes all energy." The Des Moines Register has more details on the forum itself, which was focused on issues facing American manufacturers. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has a rundown of the ongoing conflict between Bachmann and Ed Rollins, her former campaign manager. Earlier this week, Rollins told ABC News that Bachmann is "out of money and out of ideas" in Iowa. He also told …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann toured an Iowa meat packing plant yesterday, where she called for cutting costly regulations on the nation's food producers. Her visit occasioned one of the most unique photographs of the campaign season. While in Iowa, Bachmann made what some might consider a gaffe during a campaign stop at a factory that produces solar-powered traffic lights. She told workers at the plant that federal spending and overregulation are killing the private sector—but the company gets 80 percent of its revenue from government contracts. Former Bachmann campaign chief Ed Rollins appeared on The O'Reilly Factor last night, where he softened his tone considerably on his former boss. He …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is in Iowa again today, where she's been touring factories to promote conservative economic policies. MPR and The Star Tribune have the latest news from the campaign trail. During a campaign stop in her hometown of Waterloo, Bachmann gave a rough outline of her approach to national health care policy: eliminating employer-based health insurance and creating a national insurance market. Bachmann's former campaign manager, Ed Rollins, offered some surprisingly candid—some would say "harsh"—thoughts on her odds of winning the GOP nomination. In an interview on MSNBC, Rollins said it's all over for Bachmann unless she wins Iowa. Here's the quote: "She doesn't have the …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
The results of the latest national survey are not good news for sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Texas Gov. Rick Perry leading the GOP field with 24 percent support among likely Republican voters. Bachmann comes in not second, not third, but fourth, trailing Perry by a full 14 points. Politico notes that it's the fourth survey in a row showing Perry as the Republican frontrunner. On that note, the International Business Times says Perry is continuing to steal Bachmann's thunder as the candidate of choice for tea partiers. Bachmann is back in Iowa today, speaking at a Tea Party Express rally in Des Moines. The event marks her first appearance in that state since…

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann participated in the season's second major Republican presidential debate last night, and the reviews are in. (You can watch highlights of the debate online via Fox News.) By now, you've probably already heard about the heated exchange that took place between Bachmann and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who sharply criticized each other's records in a five-minute long tit-for-tat that strayed far afield from "Minnesota Nice." (The press is having a field day with headlines like this.) Bachmann appeared unfazed by Pawlenty's jabs, and likewise shrugged off the "showmanship, not leadership" accusation leveled at her by Rick Santorum. The National Journal says she "held her own," but it's unclear which …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is busy campaigning in Iowa this week, where she's been telling supporters that she was right all along to oppose raising the debt ceiling. Fox News host Bill O'Reilly challenged Bachmann to spell out her specific plans for fixing the economy during an appearance on his show Monday night. Here's a summary of what she said: • tie Medicare costs "more to the market" rather than using a fee-for-service model; • subsidize health care costs for those who can't afford it, but not for those who can; • consider raising the age of eligibility for Medicare and Social Security for younger generations; • repeal "Obamacare"; and • fire Timothy Geithner as U.S. treasury …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
We start today's post with the lastest poll numbers, which show sixth-district congresswoman and presidential contender Michele Bachmann taking the Republican frontrunner spot in Iowa. Rasmussen Reports says Bachmann now has 22 percent support among likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers, putting her in first place in that state. Mitt Romney comes in as a close second at 21 percent, Ron Paul third at 16 percent, Rick Perry fourth at 12 percent and Tim Pawlenty fifth at 11 percent. The numbers are surely good news for the Bachmann campaign as they count down to Saturday's closely watched straw poll in Ames, Iowa. Politico says the contest will determine who will emerge as the main challenger to presumed GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney. Many are …

After leaving the 6th District and the State of Minnesota for so long and after proclaiming the State of Iowa such a wonder place to be, why would she think Minnesota and the 6th District should be waiting around for her to return to us when she negledted us and her voting responsibilities. I do not get it. None of us are able tonot do our job for a few months and then return whenever & we want; …   more ›
