Woodbury's King of Kings Church Collects 7,680 Pounds of Food During March Drive

The Woodbury church has been a supporter of the Christian Cupboard for the past 30 years, but collecting this amount of food in one month was unprecedented for King of Kings.

In response to a plea from their pastor, members of King of Kings Lutheran Church collected 7,680 pounds of food for the Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf during the month of March. The Woodbury church has been a supporter of the Christian Cupboard for the past 30 years, but collecting this amount of food in one month was unprecedented for King of Kings. The first weekend in March, during each worship service, Pastor Jon Larson shared with the congregation that families in Woodbury are choosing between buying groceries and paying their mortgage, seniors are skipping meals to pay for medication, and children are going to school hungry, according to a release. He asked the congregation to respond immediately—to go buy groceries and …

Woodbury Churches Band Together for Gift-Giving Program for Less Fortunate

Hosted by King of Kings Lutheran Church, Christian Cupboard's two-day giveaway had a different format this year.

Santa would be proud. The Woodbury community donated thousands of toys for local families this year through a Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf program. The presents were given away Monday and Tuesday at King of Kings Lutheran Church, where food shelf clients also got to wrap the gifts themselves. New this year, clients were able to “shop” for the gifts, a change from previous years when the presents were prepackaged and given away at the Christian Cupboard headquarters at Woodbury Lutheran Church. Leading up to the two-day giveaway, the toys were sorted—for age group and gender—by about 130 volunteers, said Lisa Engh, a Christian Cupboard Board member. It made for an impressive display at the church Monday. “It’s been wonderful,” …

Snapshots: Reaching for the Sky at Woodbury's King of Kings

Among airplanes to balloons, hundreds of students enjoyed vacation bible school at the Woodbury church on Monday.

Airplanes, balloons, a runway, umbrellas… that’s what’s up at Woodbury’s King of Kings Lutheran Church this week. Vacation bible school students—nearly 300 in all—enjoyed a “sky” theme for this year’s program. The most popular among five learning areas on Monday was an “imagination station,” which allowed students to experiment with fans and balloons and “hover balls.” Parents helped craft the decorations around the church, said Lisa Winston, children’s ministry coordinator. “We absolutely cannot do it without them,” she said. This is her fifth year being involved in King of King’s vacation bible school, when there were fewer than 200 total children enrolled. The program has grown steadily over the years, and now has about 140 kids—…

Answering The Call: New Lead Pastor At Woodbury’s King of Kings

Jonathan Howard Larson says he’s looking forward to leading the large Lutheran congregation.

When Jonathan Howard Larson first got the call to become a pastor at Woodbury’s King of Kings Lutheran Church, he liked the idea of preaching on Saturday nights. “Because that meant I didn’t have to get up on Sunday morning,” he said. “I’m not a morning person.” He’ll have to get used to it: Larson is the new lead pastor at King of Kings. Previously the teaching pastor at King of Kings, Larson initially came to Woodbury from a church in Wadena, MN, his first job out of seminary school more than seven years ago. The 38-year-old said he’s looking forward to the new position, though when he was younger he didn’t envision himself as the leader of a congregation, even though his father was a pastor when he was growing up in a town 15 minutes …

Holiday Lights In The Park Runs Through New Year’s

Woodbury’s King of Kings Lutheran helps sponsor the event each year.

While Christmas may be over, it doesn’t mean you can still get out and enjoy the season. The IBEW’s Holiday Lights in the Park—in partnership with King of Kings Lutheran Church of Woodbury—continues through New Year’s Day. The event is held at Lake Phalen in St. Paul. “This year’s light display has drawn more than 10,000 vehicles and 40,000 visitors since its opening on Nov. 22, it’s our largest tour yet,” Lisa Engh, IBEW Holiday Lights co-chair, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have visitors from across Minnesota stop by and visit the life-size Christmas figures and magnificent displays while contributing to some of Minnesota’s home charities. IBEW is committed to giving back to the community and what better way to raise funds …

Woodbury Pastor Says Farewell

Ralph Olsen is leaving King of Kings Lutheran after 25 years in Woodbury.

There was once a pumpkin patch at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Woodbury. It never grew. But the church did. Pastor Ralph Olsen—who founded the church through a grassroots effort in 1980 and watched it expand to one of the biggest Lutheran churches in the state—will give his final sermon this weekend. While he was at the center of some turmoil at the church about a year ago and went on sabbatical, Olsen talked about the strengths of the congregation, the various outreach programs at King of Kings and his own faith journey during a recent interview with Woodbury Patch. Olsen, 62, recalled knocking on 3,745 doors in Woodbury as he tried to drum up support for the new church 31 years ago. “Some days, I felt like the world was Roman …

Nice article. I was at the service on Sunday. I thought it kind of sad that the church didn't give Ralph anything more than a plaque for 30+ years of ministry and service.   more ›

Local Couple Creates Children’s Book to Help People Address Adoption With Their Kids

The custom-made books can be tailored to each family’s adoption experience, from the text to the race and gender of the child in the illustrations.

“Mommy, did I grow in your tummy?” For those who have recently adopted a child, there are inevitable questions they must deal with. Thanks to Cameron and Vachelle Johnston, answering those questions is a little easier. The couple—who live just outside Woodbury on the east side of Manning Avenue in Afton—has a children’s book about adoption that buyers can tailor to their own family’s experience. The book, You Grew In Our Hearts, has three spots where the story changes based on how that particular adoption came about. The books are custom made, and people type in what they want on those pages when they order it. The introduction can also be personalized and even the sex and ethnicity of the children in the illustrations changes from book to…
