The standout Royals boys lacrosse player will compete for the Bison in 2012
The North Dakota State University men’s lacrosse team announced Wednesday that Woodbury attacker Ben Alberts is part of its 2012 recruiting class. Alberts, a varsity player with the Royals since eighth grade, scored 137 points over his past two seasons. He average 5.25 points per game during that span, and in 2011 he was a finalist for the Minnesota Mr. Lacrosse Award. “We truly lucked out getting Ben," Bison coach Zach Bosh said in a press release. "He was the last addition to our recruiting class. His accomplishments in high school are impressive but I feel his game is only going to get better with more talent around him. Woodbury players brave the heat to compete in Oakdale tournament.
Temperatures were steamy and the fields soggy from Friday night's downpours as Woodbury youth lacrosse players took part in a tournament at Skyview Middle School on Saturday in Oakdale. Six teams from throughout the region took part in the tournament including Oakdale, Woodbury, Farmington, Hastings, White Bear Lake and Eagan.

Four Woodbury youth lacrosse squads met for a contest at the Bielenberg Sports Center Thursday. Woodbury resident Pat Donaghy, an assistant coach at Woodbury High School and the East District director for the Youth Lacrosse of Minnesota, said the league actually had to turn away some players this year. The sport, he said, “is obviously just exploding.” “It’s getting more and more popular every year,” Donaghy said. Why the growth? “It’s a summer sport that’s fast-paced and it takes a lot of practice—but every time a kid pocks up a stick they get better and better,” Donaghy said. “It’s almost like a cult; you see kids carrying their sticks everywhere.” Donaghy said he’s seen steady improvements in the league’s quality of play over recent …

The spring season came to a close for the Woodbury boys lacrosse and East Ridge softball teams this week as the Royals and Raptors lost in the later rounds of their respective sectional tournaments. The Woodbury boys lacrosse team on Friday advanced to the Section 5 semifinals for the first time after an 8-6 win at Edina in a quarterfinal matchup. Third-seeded Edina led No. 6 seed Woodbury by a narrow margin for much of the game before Jim Redesill tied the game at 6-6 late in the third quarter. The senior midfielder then gave the Royals the lead for good, 7-6, on a power play with just under three minutes elapsed in the fourth quarter—setting off a jubilant celebration on the Woodbury sidelines and among the blue-clad fans bundled in the stands on a chilly evening. Despite a valiant effort, the Woodbury boys tennis team saw its season come to an end with a narrow loss to the top seed in its sectional championship match on Wednesday. Woodbury Boys Tennis: Eastview 4, Royals 3 After defeating No. 2 seed Eagan in the Section 3AA semifinals on Monday, the third-seeded Woodbury boys tennis team came ever-so-close to pulling off another upset over a South Suburban Conference squad in the championship match on Wednesday. The Royals took No. 1 seeded Eastview to the limit at Simley High School before falling 4-3 after a thrilling afternoon in Inver Grove Heights. Woodbury senior Ben Alberts was selected as one of seven finalists for the 2011 Minnesota Mr. Lacrosse Award. The Mr. Lacrosse Award winner will be announced Sunday, June 5, at the Grand Ballroom at River Centre in St. Paul, two days before the state lacrosse tournament kicks off. As of Wednesday, Alberts helped Woodbury to a 5-8 record this season and the sixth seed in the Section 5 playoffs. The Royals began section play on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at home against Roseville Area. In 13 games this season, Alberts scored 35 goals and added a team-high 37 assists. He led the team with 72 points in the regular season, which is the second highest point total in the state behind Blake's George Ordway's 74, according to mnlaxhub.com.

Woodbury Baseball: Losing Streak Hits 14 Games For Royals Defeats of 5-1 and 6-1 to Cretin-Derham Hall and Roseville on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, increased the Woodbury baseball team's losing streak to 14 games heading into a regular-season finale at White Bear Lake on Friday. The Royals' last victory came against Suburban East Conference leader Forest Lake on April 18. Since that point, Woodbury has dropped to 3-16 overall and 3-14 in conference play. Ryan Fritze leads the offense with a .438 batting average, 11 runs scored and 20 RBIs and is also pacing the pitching staff with a 2.50 earned run average, two wins and 19 strikeouts. The postseason officially began locally on Tuesday as the Woodbury and East Ridge boys tennis teams both competed in the opening round of the Section 3AA Tournament.
