Bachmann Beat: 'If at First You Don't Secede, Try Again,' New Hire Says

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district Congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann’s campaign released a new Web ad Tuesday highlighting political inconsistencies of her Republican rivals. “With Michele Bachmann, there are no policy flip-flops,” reads the campaign’s description of the video. “There's no need to compromise on one of the issues that matters to you. She means what she says, and she says what she means.” The ad ends with the text, “Don’t settle: NoSurprises2012.com,” a reference to the campaign’s recently introduced website that touts Bachmann’s consistent conservative ideology. Bachmann selected state Sen. Lee Bright to be her South Carolina state campaign chairman on Tuesday.   Bright helped pass an anti-federal health care law in …

“I will use absolutely everything in our arsenal against the Iranians,” Bachmann said. Brilliant. We don't need respect because we've got nukes!   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: Pitched Battle With Pawlenty Continues

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty continued their escalating war of words Monday, with Pawlenty hitting back over Bachmann's criticism last weekend of his record as governor. The Star Tribune says the former allies are now engaged in a pitched battle to win Republican support in the critical early caucus state of Iowa. The Des Moines Register fact-checks some of their recent statements about each other. Bachmann blasted President Obama's primetime TV address last night, calling his speech on the ongoing debt crisis "political gamesmanship." Obama urged Congress to raise the debt ceiling and adopt a "balanced approach" to eliminating the federal deficit, which Bachmann said "is code for higher taxes …

It looks like Senator McCain is doing a better job of blasting Bachmann's policy ideas. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/07/27/mccain-refers-to-tea-party-hobbits-blasts-bachmann-backed-idea/?hpt=hp_t1   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: A Hard Road Ahead?

A daily roundup of news and commentary on U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Over the past several weeks, 6th District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann has undergone a remarkable transformation from a noted political gadfly to a serious and leading contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. A new Star Tribune poll shows Bachmann with a huge lead in Iowa. But the New Republic (a left-leaning publication) says things are likely to get more difficult for Bachmann from here on out: [N]ow that Bachmann is the real deal, her candidacy is about to endure its toughest moments yet—including intensified scrutiny of her background and character (which is already very much under way), unrealistic expectations for her candidacy, a possible existential threat from Governor Rick Perry, and GOP elite misgivings about…

Actually I like it, Jeremy. While they are taking swipes at each other they aren't addressing the real issues. It's fun. Why bother with stuff like the pesky debt ceiling and collapsing dollar? Pass the popcorn!   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: Polls, Migraines and 'Obamacare'

A daily roundup of news and commentary on U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

A new national poll shows 6th District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann at the top of the 2012 Republican presidential field, beating closest competitor Mitt Romney by 1 percentage point. Bachmann signed the tea party-backed "Cap, Cut and Balance" pledge during a presidential campaign stop in South Carolina on Monday. The pledge opposes any increase in the U.S. debt limit until federal spending is reduced and the budget is balanced.  To this, Bachmann added one other stipulation: the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. "Obamacare") must be defunded and repealed. Bachmann also attacked a $1.2 billion settlement authorized last year by President Obama to black farmers who alleged discrimination by the U.S. Department of …

Bachmann Daily Beat: Family Clinic Under Fire

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth District congresswoman and presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann has described herself as having a "titanium spine," but the Miami Herald says police records show a different side of the candidate. Several of the congresswoman's detractors have apparently wound up targets of police investigations for making critical comments either in person or via email. (In her defense, at least one of the incidents occurred in the aftermath of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting.) Speaking of investigations, ABC News reports that the Bachmann family clinic, run by Bachmann's husband Marcus, does indeed offer "reparative therapy"—a controversial practice whereby therapists attempt to "pray away" a patient's homosexuality (video). Mr. Bachmann has …

Hi Kirsten, I completely admire Christian prayer and like you, I believe in miracles. I see them every day. But I don't think counseling Gay people to believe they can become straight falls into this category. I'm a straight man, and I can tell you positively that being attracted to women is not a "choice" I ever made. It is hard-wired into me, just as it is other people - both straight and gay. …   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: Fourth of July Edition

A daily roundup of news and commentary on U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann will spend her Independence Day finishing out a three-day bus tour of Iowa, where she has been aggressively courting Christian conservative voters. Bachmann has been focusing heavily on her personal and religious history in her recent Iowa stump speeches, but also took time to address the issue of energy, advocating for using more domestically produced coal, oil and natural gas. Although she's polling favorably in the state, the Associated Press says Bachmann has a weak campaign organization there. The London-based Financial Times offers yet another profile of the congresswoman — this one focusing on her religious roots and her reputation as an outsider …

Renee, I am not exactly the world's biggest Bachmann fan, but I think someone needs to point out that the two authors of the book you are pushing are two of the biggest commies you could ever find. I think once you've researched the authors you'll understand that anything written should be taken with a giant grain of salt. I'd hate for anyone to believe they are legitimate authors without an axe …   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: Book Deal, Building Momentum

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann began this week with a stellar debate performance, and she ends it with a corresponding surge in the polls. MinnPost reports the latest Rasmussen poll puts Bachmann in second place among Republican presidential contenders, behind only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Bachmann will join several other candidates for a Republican gathering and straw poll in New Orleans on Saturday. Romney and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty will not be present. The New York Times reports that Bachmann has snagged a book deal for a memoir due out later this fall. The proposed book will provide "an account of the formation of her political and economic ideas." Sources familiar with the negotiations said Bachmann was "very impressive" …
