McCollum Submits ‘Beef, Beer & Biscuits’ at Delegation Hot Dish Event

Rep. Tim Walz's ‘Hermann the Germann Hotdish’ won this year’s competition.

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum whipped up a hotdish with beef, biscuits and even a bottle of Stillwater-brewed Lift Bridge Chestnut Hill Brown Ale, but she couldn't bring home the big prize at the third annual Minnesota Delegation Hotdish Competition.  Rep. Tim Walz's “Hermann the Germann Hotdish” won this year’s “friendly, bipartisan, and bicameral ‘Hot Dish Off.’” The competition among Minnesota’s congressional delegation started in 2011 as a way to celebrate Minnesota before the session started. This year, McCollum—who represents Woodbury in Minnesota's Fourth Congressional District—entered a “Beef, Beer & Biscuits Hotdish.” Sen. Al Franken cooked “Willmar Stew,” while Sen. Amy Klobuchar prepared “Hormel ‘I Can't Believe It's Not SPAM’ …

Ready for a 9-Patty Burger? Jake’s Wayback Burgers to Open in Woodbury

The burger shop plans to to open this year. The Woodbury Jake’s Wayback Burgers will be the first in Minnesota.

The home of the “triple triple” is coming to Woodbury. Jake’s Wayback Burgers—which features a nine-patty concoction—is planning to open at 8470 City Centre Drive, where Kelly Gallery is now located. The framing shop is moving to a currently vacant space next door to the City Centre Caribou Coffee. The Woodbury location will be the first Jake’s Wayback Burgers to open in Minnesota, said Gillian Maffeo, director of marketing. But the company is eyeing other spots in the state. “We’re expanding like crazy,” Maffeo said. The menus vary by location, but all feature signature burgers and sandwiches, fries and onion rings, hotdogs, a variety of shakes and “Irish nachos,” Maffeo said. An opening date for the Woodbury location hasn’t been set, she…

Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange Passes Senate

"I have been outspoken about my opposition of the Affordable Care Act from the beginning, and I did not vote for the bill," Rep. Andrea Kieffer said in her weekly newsletter.

Late Thursday night, the Minnesota State Senate passed the Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange.  Part of the Affordable Care Act, House File 1, asks each state to set up an internet portal, known as an exchange, to help individuals purchase health insurance. Small businesses with up to 100 employees or those without coverage can purchase health coverage in the exchange. In states that have decided not to organize their own exchange, the federal government will establish one for them.  In her weekly newsletter, Rep. Andrea Kieffer, a Woodbury Republican, said the plan at this point is to begin enrolling consumers in October, and assistants will help citizens navigate the online options to purchase insurance. "I have been outspoken about my …

HHF34, does shopping for airline tickets online, where you can compare prices and the number of stopovers, take away your rights to make your own choices regarding which airline to fly? That is the best analogy for the insurance exchange - you'll be able to compare coverage and prices online before you buy insurance, the way you can compare prices and amenities online before you buy airline …   more ›

Sen. Wiger: Anti-Bullying Legislation is Needed to Protect Our Kids

A column from Sen. Chuck Wiger of District 43.

In 2012, Governor Dayton formed a task force on the prevention of school bullying. Bullying was a problem before 2011, but the Governor’s task force shined a light toward an ongoing problem. Back in 2009, I offered anti-bullying legislation, which passed the House and Senate, but was vetoed by Governor Tim Pawlenty. This year, however, I’m optimistic we will pass legislation based on the task force’s recommendations from last August. Those recommendations, and the current bill, are a result of months of public testimony and deliberation. The task force recommended a complete overhaul of the limited policy against bullying by repealing current law and implementing new definitions, reporting, training and procedures on bullying. Furthermore…

Woodbury Rep. Ward on Revised Budget Forecast: ‘Real Progress Towards Economic Recovery’

The latest budget forecast for Minnesota came out this week, projecting a smaller deficit than previously anticipated.

JoAnn Ward, a first-term state House representative from Woodbury, says a revised budget forecast for Minnesota is encouraging, but more work lies ahead. The February budget forecast released this week shows a projected deficit of $627 million for fiscal years 2014-15, down from November’s projected $1.1 billion deficit. “Minnesota is making real progress towards economic recovery and I am encouraged that the state is in a better place now than a few months ago,” Ward (DFL-Woodbury) said in a statement. “We still must tackle a large deficit, but I am confident that we will close this gap in a responsible way that sets up Minnesota for future growth and prosperity.” Republicans, meanwhile, said that despite the improved projections, the DFL…

We're in debt due to massive tax cuts, two unfunded wars, an unfunded mandate (Medicare Part D) and a huge recession which reduced government revenues (people who are out of work don't pay income taxes) and increased spending on necessary services such as food stamps and unemployment benefits. The best, most effective way to reduce our debt is to increase employment and grow our GDP, reducing the…   more ›

Woodbury Rep. Kieffer Keeps Pushing for Increased Penalties for Repeat Sex Offenders

The Republican’s bill was recently heard in the House Public Safety Committee.

Andrea Kieffer, the House District 53B representative, says it looks as though her legislation to increase penalties for repeat sex offenders may be rolled into a larger public safety bill. “Which is very disappointing,” said Kieffer, of Woodbury, serving her second term in the state House. The bill has bipartisan support, she said, and the fear is that having it included in an omnibus bill could result in lawmakers voting along party lines, rather than supporting it on its own. Kieffer, a Republican, championed a similar bill during the last legislative session and wants to see it as a stand-alone bill in 2013. The legislation was recently heard in the House Public Safety Committee. Critics point to additional costs for keeping such …

Woodbury Rep. JoAnn Ward Working to Battle Invasive Species

Washington County is the “hotspot” for Grecian foxglove, she said.

Woodbury Rep. JoAnn Ward is working on a bill that would allow the Department of Natural Resources to engage in the eradication of Grecian foxglove. Washington County, Ward said, is the “hotspot” for the invasive species, which has been spotted in Afton State Park and farms in the area. “We don’t want it to get to Woodbury,” said Ward, a DFLer in her first term as the House District 53A representative. “It’s already in a lot of people’s property.” Native to central and southern Europe, Grecian foxglove is poisonous to humans, wildlife and livestock, according to the state Department of Agriculture. “In Minnesota, it is invasive and displaces desirable vegetation,” according to a webpage on the plant on the Department of Agriculture’s …

Preview: Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton's State of the State Address

Gov. Mark Dayton is scheduled to deliver his State of the State address at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the House Chamber.

Gov. Mark Dayton will give his State of the State address Wednesday from the House Chambers at the State Capitol in St. Paul. Dayton is not expected to make any new announcements on Wednesday night, but rather take the opportunity to promote his budget proposal and tax overhaul, the Pioneer Press reports. The governor says his biennial budget proposal will eliminate the state’s $1.1 billion budget deficit and balance government spending and revenue over the next two fiscal years while putting an end to the “fiscal games” and “accounting gimmicks” of the last decade. Dayton’s proposals include cutting the sales tax rate from 6.875 percent to 5.5 percent, while broadening the tax to many goods and services that are currently exempt. He also …

Sunday Alcohol Sales in Minnesota? ‘Winners and Losers,’ Says Woodbury Liquor Store Owner

Do you support Sunday liquor sales in Minnesota? Tell us why or why not in the comment section below.

For Jack Lanners, owner of Woodbury’s MGM Liquor Warehouse, being able to sell alcohol on Sundays and holidays wouldn’t necessarily be a good thing for the state. “There are winners and losers,” he said. A bipartisan bill reintroduced in the Senate this week aims to repeal the long-standing ban of selling off-sale liquor on Sundays. The bill would also allow sales on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve (after 8 p.m.) and Christmas Day. Liquor store owners would have to weigh the extra costs of being open on Sundays versus a seventh day of sales, and much of that is based on a store’s proximity to the Wisconsin border, Lanners said. There are also moral implications. Also, he noted studies showing that in other states, where Sunday sales are legal…

Auto sales are completely different than liquor. In order to complete the auto sale the Minnesota Department of Transportation must be open and they are not. Buyers would be required to return to the dealerships on Monday to complete the sale which I don't think they would like. I'm not an expert but I know there is much more to it than the old 'blue laws' some of us experienced as young children.   more ›
