Students braved the chill with shovels Monday morning, marking the beginning of construction on a new two-story, 22,000-square-foot building.
Three straight days of events at New Life Church and Academy culminated Monday morning as the school celebrated the groundbreaking of a new facility. The church held its own ceremony Sunday as plans to construct a new two-story, 22,000-square-foot building are moving forward. The $5 million multipurpose center—which will house classrooms and meeting space—is part of a $6 million capital campaign that includes updates for the existing facility. The new building will be constructed in the flagpole area and circle turnaround, “which we try to keep people out of anyway,” said Cade Lambert, head of school at New Life Academy. Already, $4.1 million has been raised, he said, and an auction was held Saturday night as funds continue to be raised. …

The Math and Science Academy expects the new building to be complete by next August.
The Math and Science Academy on Friday held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new $5 million gym/classroom facility. “We’ve got way too many students in that building,” Director Bob Kreischer said, pointing to the main complex for the charter school, which was founded about 13 years ago. The Woodbury school has a waiting list, Kreischer said, and the new structure will allow for smaller classrooms, performance space and physical education classes. Currently, students head over to the YMCA for 90 minutes each week. “To, me, that’s not having phy ed,” he said, adding that a gym teacher will likely be hired. The 30,400-square-foot facility, which will house 10 classrooms, is expected to be complete by next August, Kreischer said. Once built, …

Skills Sports Training, the newest indoor sports-training facility in Woodbury, is filling a niche for young athletes.
With numerous training facilities on the south and west sides of the Twin Cities, parents, coaches and athletes have been wondering for years why an indoor, multi-sport training facility like this hasn’t been opened up in the Woodbury area. “I have two boys that participate in sports and I’ve never been able to find a place where the kids and I can just go and practice without buying a big ticket training package,” said Costa Hasapopoulos, owner of Skills Sports Training, which recently opened just outside Woodbury in Lake Elmo. “Our goal at Skills is to have an affordable, indoor athletic space where athletes can bring in their own trainer if they want, use one of ours, or just come in and practice on their own," Hasapopoulos said. The …

The Woodbury health center now offers more on-site oncologists and services, and plans to ask the state for permission to move a linear accelerator—used for radiation therapy—to Woodwinds from St. John's Hospital.
Woodwinds Health Campus on Tuesday unveiled its latest initiative to fight cancer. The Woodbury hospital, part of the HealthEast system, has expanded its offerings for cancer patients with new facilities for chemotherapy and an increase in on-site oncologists. The number of people with cancer in the Woodbury area is growing faster than it is elsewhere, mostly due to an aging population and increased early detection, said Les Stern, vice president of specialty physicians with HealthEast. With its holistic care model—which includes acupressure, music therapy and other alternative-medicine options—Woodwinds was well suited for the expanded care, Stern said. The new program, called "Cancer Care," will also mean shorter drives for many …
