An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann made her first public appearance in Minnesota since withdrawing from the Republican presidential race, speaking Sunday at an anti-abortion protest in St. Paul. Bachmann told the hundreds of protesters that Roe v. Wade should be repealed within the next year. "Here on our watch we will stand, we will stand for life, we will never forget, we will never give up, and next year we will gather in a day of celebration when we have finally ended abortion in this all important election," Bachmann said. "Join me this year. Choose life." On the morning of Jan. 19, shortly before the South Carolina primary, Bachmann seemed to put out a statement implying that she would not be endorsing Newt Gingrich. “…

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
More than a week after sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann dropped out of the presidential race, her campaign is making legal threats to stop a super PAC supporting rival Republican Newt Gingrich from airing radio ads that make it seem as if Bachmann has endorsed Gingrich. Keith Nahigian, Bachmann’s former campaign manager, said the ad misrepresents her position. “The words that came out of her mouth [at the 2008 Republican National Convention] were written by his staff, of how to introduce him,” Nahigian said, of Gingrich. “They’re not even her own thoughts.” Peter Waldron, Bachmann’s “faith outreach coordinator,” is complaining about a personal email sent by a Rick Santorum staffer questioning whether a woman should be …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
As sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann traverses Iowa as part of her 99-county tour before the Jan. 3 caucus, she’s been pounding rival Republican Newt Gingrich on abortion, illegal immigrants and his lobbying for mortgage giant, Freddie Mac. “While the rest of the country was dealing with economic meltdown, he was pocketing $1.6 million,” she said of Gingrich’s Freddie Mac consultancy in a Fort Dodge press conference. She implied Gingrich had the wrong position on abortion. “[Gingrich] said he would support and campaign for Republicans that support the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion,” Bachmann said. “I would never do that … because this is a barbaric practice.” On CNN, Bachmann said she …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann went on the offensive against Newt Gingrich at Thursday’s Republican debate in Iowa, accusing him of lobbying and citing the $1.6 million in consulting fees he’s received from mortgage giant Freddie Mac since leaving office. “We can’t have as our nominee for the Republican Party someone who continues to stand for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae,” she said. “They need to be shut down, not built up.” Gingrich denied Bachmann’s claims that he was a lobbyist. “What she just said is factually not true,” he said of Bachmann’s attacks. “I never lobbied under any circumstance.” (A video of Bachmann and Gingrich sparring is available at the Washington Post.) During the debate, …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Before Dec. 28, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann intends to visit each of Iowa’s 99 counties in a final push before the Jan. 3 precinct caucuses. After an opinion poll released last weekend showed Bachmann with only a 6 percent approval rating, she lumped her opponents together as “Newt Romney.” Now Newt Gingrich has been going on the offensive, deriding Bachmann for mistakenly saying last summer that the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Concord, New Hampshire, instead of in Concord, Mass. According to CBS, when reporters asked Gingrich about Bachmann’s attacks on health care during Saturday’s debate, he responded, “Have you been in Concord? Go to Concord sometime and I'll talk to …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
During Saturday’s debate, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann took on the race’s front-runners, whose names she compacted into the moniker, “Newt Romney.” (Before the debate, she described them as being “milquetoast.”) “If you look at Newt-Romney, they were for ObamaCare principles,” she said during the debate. “If you look at Newt-Romney, they were for cap and trade.” Both Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney responded to Bachmann during the debate, with Romney saying that “he and I are not clones, I promise.” “Well, Michele, you know, a lot of what you say just isn’t true, period,” Gingrich said. “You know, I think it’s important for you, and the— this is a fair game, and everybody gets to— to— to pick …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
As Newt Gingrich becomes the front-runner in the race for the White House, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has been fine-tuning her criticisms, accusing him of influence-peddling and lobbying. Here’s the quote from a Fox News Sunday interview: [Gingrich]’s been a part of Washington, D.C., for over 30 years. He’s as establishment as you get. His address is located on the Rodeo Drive of Washington, which is K street. His organizations have taken in over a hundred million dollars just this year alone to peddle influence. You don’t have to be a lobbyist within the letter of the law in order to influence the outcome of legislation.” Bachmann has received scrutiny for briefly supporting the pardon request…

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
In an interview with an Iowa radio station, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said that rival Republican Herman Cain was speaking in “code” about his campaign’s chances after allegations of adultery. “They’re looking at the viability of their effort moving forward,” she told the station. “I think that they recognize that the support has really dropped out of their campaign because of those questions (over adultery).” But she said it was “not for me to say” whether he should drop out of the race. Her Iowa campaign manager, Kent Sorenson, apologized for a tweet about “moving trucks” at the Cain campaign headquarters. The Cain campaign was receiving a shipment that included about 3,000 yard signs. It's "…

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann kicked off the book tour for her memoir “Core of Conviction” on Friday at the Mall of America in Bloomington. About a dozen members of the Occupy Wall Street movement bought books in order to confront Bachmann at the Mall of America. At another book signing, Bachmann was dismissive of the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper’s endorsement of Newt Gingrich. "We shouldn’t settle. More than any time, this is an election that we need to hold out for the ideal, like Michele,” her spokeswoman, Alice Stewart, said. Bachmann isn’t wholly satisfied with the apology she received from NBC after The Roots played the Fishbone song “Lyin Ass B----” was played while she walked onto …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
During Saturday night’s debate, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann’s campaign fired off an email stating that “former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to uphold a consistently pro-life stance throughout his career in public life.” The email accused Gingrich of being "open to watering down the Republican Party's commitment to the inalienable right to life." During the debate, Bachmann focused on social issues and spoke about the importance of her “biblical world view” in shaping her life. She said that since God created people, he also created government. "He wrote the owner's manual, so to speak," she said. "He has a lot of say about marriage, family, children." A new congressional district map …

Davea, I too wish the DFL would put up a better candidate. I also wish the GOP would put up a better candidate. Two good choices, that would be nice. Maybe after re-districting, John Kline would be in my new district. I could live with that.   more ›
