New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look

The restaurant is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday examined plans for a new restaurant at the Bielenberg Sports Center. Gartner Restaurant Holdings has been selected to handle food service at the new complex, which is currently under construction. A restaurant would be built on the second floor of the new lobby, and Gartner Restaurant Holdings would also run a snack bar on the first floor. Greg Gartner said his company has experience providing food service at other sports facilities and the concept for the Woodbury space was partially inspired by restaurants at the Xcel Energy Center. Other municipal sports facilities are including restaurants, said Bob Klatt, Woodbury Parks and Recreation director. “The trend is going that way,” he said. The plans …

Well, during the winter months, a nice cup of hot chocolate will go well beside that fancy fireplace in the picture. Out with the splashpad, I say. Put in a pool that would be used.   more ›

I thought the National Sports Center in Blaine served. I could be wrong though. I remember it coming up when the city was considering asking a question about alcohol at Bielenberg as part of the biannual survey.   more ›

‘Split Verdict’ on Splash Pad for Task Force, Woodbury Councilman Says

The Woodbury City Council will discuss the proposal at Wednesday night’s meeting.

Councilwoman Julie Ohs has been a strong proponent of the idea for a splash pad at the Bielenberg Sports Center. Councilman Christopher Burns has not. As for the Bielenberg Sports Center Expansion Task Force, which was reconvened Tuesday morning to examine the splash pad idea, it was a “split verdict,” Burns said. There were “strong opinions on both sides,” Burns said, “much like the council.” The Woodbury City Council is set to discuss the splash pad at its meeting Wednesday night. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagle Valley Golf Course clubhouse. Ohs has made clear her support for a splash pad, saying in February it would make the revamped sports center “more accessible, more inclusive.” Woodbury officials have discussed the idea for …

From Woodbury: Reaction to the Splash Pad Idea

Here’s what people were saying about the proposal this week.

The Woodbury City Council this week had a tepid reaction to the idea for a splash pad as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion plans. Here’s what people had to say… We asked: Would you guys want to see a splash pad at the Woodbury, MN-Bielenberg Sports Center? Jerome: No Splashpad. How about a nice pool and waterpark like some other communities have. Camille: yes, Woodbury, a little community water fun would be GREAT! Nicola: For sure! Cottage Grove's splash pad is awesome! A water park would be way better but I'll take the splash pad! Sarah: Cottage Grove has a new splash pad...to build another one in Woodbury would be redundant. Heather: Yes! We drive to the CG one. We'd love to have one in our community here. Heather: They're …

‘The Front Door’ for the New Bielenberg Sports Center

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday examined the exterior plans for the expansion project.

A multi-functional plaza is in the works for the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. “It’s really the front door,” said John Slack, landscape architect with Stantec Consulting, who showed the Woodbury City Council drawings of the latest plans during a workshop Wednesday. The area would include trees, seating areas, bike racks and outlets for vendors during events. The plaza was one of several exterior aspects of the project discussed Wednesday. The city plans to raze the Bielenberg Sports Center’s dome this April and begin construction on a new $21.8 million field house and two-story lobby linking the facility with the existing arenas. Council members seemed generally to favor the plans for the plaza, though Councilman Paul Rebholz…

Major Decisions on Bielenberg Sports Center Expansion: Woodbury Council Preview

The Woodbury City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.

Woodbury on Wednesday could take a big step toward a new Bielenberg Sports Center. Or three, to be exact. The City Council is set to consider three measures that would move the $21.8 million project forward. The city plans to raze the aging dome this April and start construction on a new field house and lobby. Specifically, the council is expected to vote on: The city over the past several months has refined its plans for the 120,054-square-foot expansion project, which will not require the city to raise taxes. The project also includes $500,000 in improvements to the two existing rinks, along with a third sheet of outdoor ice geared toward pleasure skating. How Will New Development in Woodbury Impact Local Schools?

South Washington County Schools officials are continually apprised of new development plans in area cities.

As Woodbury prepares for 6,000 new homes in the Phase 2 area of the city over the next decade, District 833 officials are keeping an eye on future attendance needs. Mike Vogel, assistant to the superintendent for operations, said South Washington County Schools officials meet regularly with Woodbury and Cottage Grove leaders about future growth. Woodbury’s Phase 2 is near East Ridge High School, but Vogel said he doesn’t expect the new development will have much of an impact at the high school in the near term. “Most families don’t move when their kids are at that age,” he said. Instead, the district expects the immediate need to come at the elementary and middle school levels. Much of Phase 2 falls in the Bailey Elementary boundary, Vogel…
