The Mousetrap Set Him Off: Woodbury Man Sentenced for Assault

Matthew Joseph Nelson, 23, was convicted of third-degree assault.

A Woodbury man was recently sentenced to three years of probation after he was convicted of assaulting his brother following a prank involving mousetraps. Matthew Joseph Nelson, 23, must also complete a one-day anger-management class and pay a $100 fine following the Jan. 13 incident in Woodbury. According to the criminal complaint: Woodbury police were called to a home at the 2300 block of Cascade Plaza South on a report of a domestic assault between brothers. They had been helping their mother set mousetraps. Nelson’s mother and brother were teasing him about setting a mousetrap in his bed, and he later decided to leave. A Woodbury man faces a felony assault charge stemming from the Jan. 13 incident.

After being startled by a mousetrap his brother set in an effort to play a prank, a Woodbury man allegedly began punching his sibling in the head and now faces a felony assault charge. Matthew Joseph Nelson, 23, was the apparent victim of the Jan. 13 prank that sparked the altercation and left his brother needing four stitches to close a cut on his lip. According to the criminal complaint: Woodbury police were called to a home at the 2300 block of Cascade Plaza South on a report of a domestic assault between brothers. Junk Food Not Drugs, Successful Prank, Terrorist Info: Woodbury Police Blotter

Selected calls to the Woodbury Public Safety Department from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4.

The following information was obtained from recent police reports. A woman at the 8900 block of Highland Circle called police after a man came to her door and tried to get inside. She answered the door and the man looked surprised but said nothing. After she asked if she could help him, he said, “I have your paper,” then tried to open her door. She grabbed it and pulled it shut, and he continued to try to open it. He eventually left the paper on the doorstep and left. She gave police a description of and photo of the vehicle and police checked the area, but couldn’t track him down. There were no similar reports in the area. East Ridge Seniors Monkey Around

A group of students caused a backup at the roundabout near the Woodbury school as part of a series of pranks.

You might have had some trouble getting through the roundabout near East Ridge High School on Thursday morning. As part of a senior prank, a group of students got together at the school’s parking lot around 8 a.m. and drove over to the roundabout at Bailey Road and Radio Drive. And kept going around. And around. And around. “Cars were backed up pretty far,” said East Ridge senior Will Fenton, 18, who was part of the prank. “There were some people letting kids out to walk to school. Some cars even jumped the curb and drove across the field.” Police eventually showed up and sent the students on their way. “They actually thought it was pretty funny,” said Fenton, who lives in Woodbury. I'm so proud of the seniors' creativity in coming up with harmless ways to celebrate the conclusion of the school year. It is exciting to think about how they'll apply that creativity out in the workforce someday.
