New Liquor Store, Bielenberg Financing, Budget Considerations: Woodbury Council Preview

The council meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday will hold its annual Truth in Taxation hearing on the budget, likely approve a liquor license for a new liquor store and possibly OK funding mechanisms for the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. Check out the full agenda on the city’s website. The city will open up the floor to residents for a public hearing on the 2013 budget, which is expected to be at about $61.8 million. The proposed budget represents a 4.2 percent decrease from 2012. The council will have three options regarding the levy, which distributes the tax burden. The proposed levy (about $28.8 million) has come down about $204,000 since previous budget talks. If approved as presented, the levy would increase the tax impact on …

Football Wednesday: Woodbury at Forest Lake

Royals look to close out the regular season with a victory.

The playoffs for high school football are nearly upon us, and Woodbury hopes to get right against Forest Lake following a tough loss to Cretin. Woodbury (4-3 Suburban East Conference) lost to Cretin-Derham Hall 43-7; Forest Lake (2-5 SEC) lost to Mounds View 28-0. Quran Al-Hameed (Woodbury, running back) Al-Hameed scored Woodbury's lone touchdown last week, providing one of the few bright spots for the Royals. Tommy Tyson (Forest Lake, running back) Tyson led the Rangers with 61 yards on 15 carries a week ago. Woodbury is more or less locked into the second seed for the Section 4AAAAA playoffs. The Royals aren't going to catch Cretin-Derham Hall for the top spot, and even if they lose and Eagan—the team currently in the third slot—wins, it…

Football Wednesday: White Bear Lake at East Ridge

Raptors look to end regular season on winning note.

High school football teams gearing up to play Wednesday night can mean only one thing: The end of the regular season is here, and the start of the playoffs is just around the corner. Some teams' playoff fate—good or bad—is already sealed at this point, and they are just playing out the schedule. For other teams, Wednesday's contests could go a long way toward determining whether this season is looked back on as a success or failure. White Bear Lake (5-2 Suburban East Conference) edged Hastings 7-3; East Ridge (2-5 SEC) won 20-14 over Park. Dayo Ogundepo (East Ridge, running back) Ogundepo, in his first featured role in the backfield, carried 21 times for 143 yards against Park. Joe Nasvik (White Bear Lake, running back) Nasvik scored the …

Football Friday: East Ridge at Park

After tough stretch, Raptors finally get to a soft spot in their schedule.

The Raptors finally get a breather this week against a Park team that has struggled both offensively and defensively all season. There's no such thing as a gimme—especially if you're 1-5—but this is one East Ridge should get. East Ridge (1-5, 1-5 Suburban East Conference) fell to Stillwater 33-6; Park (0-6, 0-6 SEC) got blasted 54-12 by Hastings. East Ridge (Section 4AAAAA) If the Raptors win this one and upset White Bear Lake next Wednesday, they would likely grab the coveted third seed, which would mean a first-round home game and a potential trip to Woodbury in the semifinals. Their other options aren't nearly as attractive and involve opening the playoffs on the road, potentially having to face Cretin in the semis, or both. Park (…

Football Friday: Cretin-Derham Hall at Woodbury

Woodbury takes on Raiders team that's strong on offense, defense.

Both teams have put up impressive offensive numbers offensively this season—33.2 ppg. for the Raiders, 31.8 ppg. for the Royals—but the Raiders also boast one of the stingiest defenses in the state in Class AAAAA, allowing just 8.0 points per game through six weeks. Top-ranked Eden Prairie (5.7 ppg.), Owatonna (8.0) and Mounds View (9.0) are the only other teams allowing fewer than 10 ppg. Cretin-Derham Hall (6-0, 6-0 Suburban East Conference) scored an easy 35-6 win over Forest Lake; Woodbury (4-2, 4-2 SEC) won in a shootout, 37-24, over Roseville. Cretin-Derham Hall (Section 4AAAAA) The Raiders are the top team in the section in the QRF ranking system used to determine playoff seeding. The Royals are a distant second in that system, and …

Football Friday: East Ridge at Stillwater

Raptors go on the road, still searching for consistent offense.

The Ponies need to regain some momentum, while the Raptors look to find some semblance of an offense after getting shut out for the second time in three weeks last Friday. East Ridge (1-4, 1-4 Suburban East Conference) got blanked by Hastings 9-0; Stillwater (3-2, 3-2 SEC) fell to Mounds View 21-14. Stillwater (Section 2, Class AAAAA) The Ponies are in a section that uses a mathematical formula to determine seeding. The QRF system—short for Quality Results Formula—rates teams based on wins and losses, opponents' wins and losses, and class differential. So while the Ponies have one more loss than both Mounds View and White Bear Lake, they are currently second, behind Totino-Grace, in the section seedings. East Ridge (Section 4, Class AAAAA…

Football Friday: Roseville at Woodbury

Both teams looking to get back on track after losing last week.

Both the Raiders and the Royals are coming off tough losses, but only one is going to be able to rebound. Woodbury (3-2, 3-2 SEC) got tripped up by White Bear Lake 24-21. Roseville (2-3, 2-3 Suburban East Conference) let one get away against Forest Lake, losing 43-42 in overtime. Woodbury (Section 4, Class AAAAA) The Royals hold a slight edge in the race for the No. 2 seed (behind Cretin-Derham Hall), but Eagan, East Ridge and Minneapolis South are all close on their heels. Roseville (Section 2, Class AAAAA) The Raiders are currently seventh in the eight-team section rankings. Barring something out of the ordinary, Roseville is looking at a bottom-three seed and a first-round road trip. Sawyer Moon (Woodbury, quarterback) Moon had his …

Football Friday: Woodbury Looks to Build on Big Win

The Royals, coming off a thrilling victory last week, face White Bear Lake tonight.

The Woodbury football team would probably be happy with an easy win after last week's exciting victory over East Ridge, but they'll face a strong opponent tonight in White Bear Lake. Woodbury (3-1, 3-1 Suburban East Conference) edged East Ridge 35-34 in double OT; White Bear Lake (3-1, 3-1) crushed Park 48-7. Junius Wilson (Woodbury, running back) Wilson missed last week's game after getting injured early the previous Friday. But he's still got 329 yards and four scores on the season. He's expected back this week, which is good news for the Royals. Joe Wood (Woodbury, running back) Wood picked up the slack in Wilson's absence last week, running for 94 yards and a score. He too has four touchdowns—and 269 yards—on the season. Sawyer Moon (…
