DNR Plans New Fishing Pier at Woodbury’s Colby Lake

The project is part of the DNR’s “Fishing in the Neighborhood” program.

The state Department of Natural Resources plans to install a fishing pier at Woodbury’s Colby Lake this summer. The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday will likely approve a joint-powers agreement with the DNR for the fishing pier, which will be constructed at no cost to the city. Woodbury is planning to install a path to the pier at the south end of the lake, Levitt said. The Colby Lake pier will be longer but similar in style to the Powers Lake pier, which was installed 5-6 years ago as part of the Fishing in the Neighborhood program, Levitt said. …

John Kriesel's Book Chosen for Washington County Library Reading Program

The “One County, One Book” program asks residents to read the same book during January 2013.

Small talk with folks in line at the grocery store could go beyond the weather if a Washington County Library reading program gains steam. Library officials on Thursday announced the selection for the “One County, One Book” program for January 2013. The program asks residents to read the same book. The selection is Still Standing: The Story of Ssg. John Kriesel, by John Kriesel as told to Jim Kosmo. Woodbury Looks to Renew Cop-Firefighter Program

The unique program, aimed at improving response times for fires, was previously curtailed by budget constraints.

It’s not exactly the phone booth that City Administrator Clint Gridley joked about. But having certain police officers change into their firefighting gear at the back of their vehicles when a blaze breaks out is critical to response times for the Woodbury Fire Department, officials said during a City Council workshop Wednesday. Woodbury is one of about 250 cities nationwide that cross-trains police officers as firefighters. The city began the program in 2005, but it was halted in 2009 because of budget constraints. It costs $2,850 to cross-train and equip a police officer as a firefighter. The Public Safety Department is hoping to renew the program. “This is very much an unfinished piece of business for us,” said Public Safety Chief Lee …

School Board Discusses Future of Spanish Immersion Program

District 833 officials say benefits of immersion ‘far outweigh’ drawbacks.

As students in District 833’s Spanish immersion program near high school, school officials are working to determine what type of classes they will take in the future. In a Nov. 3 workshop, the South Washington County School Board discussed the program as a whole and how Spanish classes may look at the high school and middle school levels. Current seventh-grade Spanish immersion students will continue the program in high school level stating in 2013, which presents some opportunities and challenges for district officials, Linda Plante, Woodbury High School principal, said at the meeting. Plante said the high school Spanish program will need to be expanded because the fluency level of the immersion students coming into high school will far …
