‘Women Poets’ Display Coming to Woodbury Library

The portraits from Jay Wittenberg will be at the R.H. Stafford Branch during January.

Washington County Library is inviting residents to view an art display featuring female poets. The gallery—from Jay Wittenberg, a professional artist for more than 20 years whose work has been exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minnesota Museum of American Art—is titled Women Poets: Portraits by Jay Wittenberg. It will be at the R.H. Stafford Branch in Woodbury during January. “Wittenberg celebrates the genius of famous women poets with his collection of portraits,” reads a release from Washington County Library. Snapshots: Celebrity Read-A-Thon At The Woodbury Library

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, local celebrities read to children at the R.H. Stafford Branch Library in Woodbury.

One of the best parts of my job is getting out in the community and meeting people. I was grateful for the chance over the weekend to participate in a Washington County Library Read-a-Thon. And while I viewed this as a good chance to meet some of Woodbury's younger residents, when I started reading on Saturday, there wasn't anyone there. R.H. Stafford Library Manager Chad Lubbers said it didn't matter. It's like keeping a vigil, he told me, just keep on reading. So I jumped into Green Eggs and Ham. It was a little odd reading to no one, but by the time I got into The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Curious George and the Dump Truck, I had a small audience of a handful of kids. Woodbury Library To Close Sundays and Mondays

As part of a cost-cutting measure, all county libraries will likely have their hours shortened starting in 2012.

With the county’s budget shrinking, area libraries will likely close on Sundays and Mondays starting in 2012, said Library Director Pat Conley. The cut is part of a budget plan that was presented to the Washington County Board Tuesday, Aug. 16. The equivalent of 5.5 full-time staff positions would be eliminated, according to Conley’s presentation. Commissioner Dennis Hegberg said he was concerned about eliminating Sunday hours because students will not have access to the library to work on homework. Commissioner Lisa Weik, who represents a portion of Woodbury, proposed having the library system work with schools to keep their libraries open longer to give students access to resources.
