A Sense of Place: 10 Years for Woodbury’s Central Park

The facility will soon mark its 10-year anniversary. Share your photos of Central Park here.

A decade ago, a group of residents wanted to create a community gathering place in Woodbury. Today, the Central Park facility functions as the hub of the city. It was a unique concept 10 years ago, said Cheryl Hurst, a Woodbury City Council member at the time who championed efforts to get it built. “They knew that we didn’t have a downtown, per se,” said Hurst, who now lives in Florida. “So it was trying to meet the needs of the community—to have a sense of place in the heart of Woodbury.” On Saturday, Nov. 17, the city will mark the 10-year anniversary of Central Park. Washington County will also celebrate the anniversary of the R.H. Stafford Branch Library, named in honor of late County Commissioner Dick Stafford.        Related: Central…

Summer Reading For This Woodbury Resident: eBook Style

I’ve been utilizing the new eBook format at Washington County libraries. Here’s what I found out.

I’m an insatiable reader who’s been reading just for you! As summer reading suggestions pile up and e-readers fly off of store shelves, it’s time to try out Washington County Library’s new e-book offerings. I’ve been testing the service, and here’s what I’ve found so far. I have an iPad and a Kindle and have read purchased books on both. I have not yet used a Nook from Barnes and Noble. But I’ve encouraged my mother to buy a Nook as her first e-reader—because Barnes and Noble offers in-store booksellers to help reluctant technology adopters, like my mom, get started. Another advantage of a Nook is that it supports the EPUB format used by Washington County Library. I’m disappointed that I can’t borrow library eBooks on my Kindle. A …

I live in a dual Nook (Nook1st Edition and Nook Color) household and download e-content from my region's public library network on a weekly basis. I chose B& N Nook for the OverDrive loan feature. The Buffalo & Erie County Library system permits 7 or 14 day loan periods and you can borrow up to 20 titles at one time. I imagine there are some patrons who borrow the maximum. I think the generous …   more ›

Woodbury Council Hears Library Update

In other news, the city approved a wine and beer license for the Carbone’s on Eagle Creek Lane and learned that nearly 3,800 people attended the Woodbury Community Expo.

What’s the No. 1 question asked of staffers at the Woodbury library? Where’s the bathroom? No. 2? What type of e-reader should I buy? Those were a couple interesting nuggets laid out by Chad Lubbers, manager of the R.H. Stafford Library, during a presentation at Wednesday night’s Woodbury City Council meeting. Washington County libraries recently began loaning books that can be viewed on most e-readers. People can “check them out” through the library’s website for one- two- or three-week periods, Lubbers said. There are about 500 titles now available through the program, he said. (When asked by Councilman Paul Rebholz which type of e-reader he should buy, Lubbers chuckled and declined to give his opinion.) The library—which Lubbers said is…
