Top Stories of 2012, No. 1: Fire Ravages Woodbury Home

As we ring in the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: Coming upon this scene early on a Sunday morning was shocking. It’s always sad to see a family displaced by a disaster at the home. And I had more than one person tell me they walk or bike through this neighborhood often, and they too were upset by what happened. We also ran an update a few days later. See: Family from Woodbury House Fire Thanks Those Who Responded Here’s the story, which was published Sept. 23, 2012. A Woodbury family was able to escape a major house fire at the 8300 block of Marsh Creek Road during the early-morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 23. The family had a fire in the home's fireplace on Friday and embers were left in a trashcan in the garage, sparking the blaze, said Sgt. Curt Zacharias with the Public…

Top Stories of 2012, No. 2: X Marks the (Workout) Spot

As we ring in the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: This was the biggest surprise when it came to the most-read stories of the year. There wasn’t much to this post, considering I never heard back from company officials. And this story about the changes at the gym seemed to get more steam: Power Lifters Feel Pressed Out at Woodbury’s Xperience Fitness Here’s the story, which was published May 3, 2012. Gold’s Gym in Woodbury is now Xperience Fitness. There is a new sign announcing the change at the fitness center, located at 1555 Queens Drive in Woodbury. Employees there directed Patch to an official in Wisconsin who did not return phone calls seeking comment. Vertical Fitness Group—an Appleton, Wis.-based health club company—has converted 11 Gold’s Gym locations in Minnesota …

Top Stories of 2012, No. 5: Restaurant Revival

As we count down to the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: News of the closure of Aperitif got plenty of people wondering what would go in at that location… and apparently Tavern Grill was a good choice. I got word from at least one reader that it was tough to find a table on the Tavern Grill patio this summer. Here’s the story, which was published Tuesday, June 5. Tavern Grill opened Tuesday in the former Aperitif space in Woodbury. “It turned out just great,” said Anoush Ansari, managing partner of Hemisphere Restaurant Partners. “This is not our first rodeo.” The Woodbury Tavern Grill offers the same food and drink menu as its locations in Edina and Blaine, Ansari said, and the space features dark wood, large black and white photos and a handsome bar. “We basically Tavernized it…

Top Stories of 2012, No. 6: Tragedy on the Roads

As we count down to the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: This was a sad story, and news of how the Cottage Grove teenager died was going around the community before authorities released the official cause. Here’s the story, which ran May 4, 2012. Update: 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 4 Authorities are looking into the possibility that the driver who died in Thursday’s car crash was electrocuted. The vehicle hit a power pole and a line came down and made contact with the car, Woodbury Police Cmdr. Steve Wills said. The driver has been identified as Nicholas Bibeau, 18, of Cottage Grove. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy, Wills said. The car was traveling northbound on Sunny Hill Drive and slid off the dirt road and hit the pole, Wills said. There was “significant…

Top Stories of 2012, No. 8: The Revolving Restaurant

As we count down to the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: Also a popular story—the news of Woody’s closure, which came as a surprise for many in Woodbury. Cowboy Jack’s seems to be more of a known quantity, but we’ll see how they do when the restaurant opens in 2013. Here’s the story, which was published Oct. 18, 2012. Renovations are underway at the former Woody’s Roadhouse in Woodbury, where crews are turning the space into a Cowboy Jack’s. The renovation only began recently, said Jesi Mosny, marketing director for the After Midnight Group, the holding company for Cowboy Jack’s. An opening date hasn’t been set, she said. Once complete, the space will have a “down-home feeling,” Mosny told Patch on Thursday. “That local place where everybody feels comfortable.” The space—at 1690 …

Top Stories of 2012, No. 10: Woodbury is for Cheaters?

As we count down to the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: This post was certainly a talker. I got tips via Facebook and Twitter about the list, which was part of a segment on a local radio station. The story also garnered a blog post from Michelle Scheuermann. See: A Member of the Happy Wives Club Here's the story, which was published Aug. 30, 2012. Are you in a loving, committed relationship? Woodbury is the No. 1 city in the Twin Cities metro area when it comes to extra-marital affairs, according to a KDWB report from ashleymadison.com, a website that links people looking to cheat on their spouse. “Though Minnesota may be considered the epicenter of Midwestern values, our membership has grown exponentially in the Twin Cities this summer. Despite many couples doing a great job of …
