How Are Those Italian Dunkers? Taste Test for Woodbury’s Red Rock Elementary

Students gave their feedback on whole-grain dunkers Wednesday as the district continues to implement changes associated with new federal guidelines for school lunches.

As South Washington County Schools carries out changes to adhere to new federal guidelines for school lunches, students at Red Rock Elementary on Wednesday got to give their feedback on new whole-grain Italian dunkers. Schwan’s brought its pizza boats to the Woodbury school, and other taste testing sessions will likely be held at other schools before a vendor is chosen, said Kristine Iturrino, cook manager at Red Rock. “They really had fun with it,” she said of the students, who for the most part liked the offering. “And they really appreciate that they have a say.” One hundred percent of grains served in District 833 will be whole grain by the 2014-15 school year. Some changes—which also put limits on salt and fat—have already been …

In Woodbury, Swimming, Biking, Running to Help Kids with Cancer

District 833 students are training for the upcoming events, and looking to raise $20,000 for the Miracles of Mitch Foundation.

A Red Rock Elementary student’s battle with cancer moved her peers at the Woodbury school last summer. Literally. Nearly 30 Red Rock students participated in last year’s MiracleKids Triathlon, a Miracles of Mitch Foundation event that raises money for families whose children are going through cancer treatment. This summer, however, the school opened up participation to other District 833 students, and several more have stepped up as the local group tries to raise $20,000 for the event, said Andrew Caflisch, principal at Red Rock Elementary. Already $10,900 has been raised for the August triathlons, and group-training sessions have been organized by one of the school’s parents, a trainer, Caflisch said. (There are two events, one at Lake …

Post-Fire Assistance From Woodbury Third-Graders

Students at Red Rock Elementary filled tubs with basic household items for the Woodbury Fire Department to help families with basic items in the wake of a blaze.

It used to be that, after a fire, the Woodbury Fire Department would refer people to the Red Cross to take care of their basic household needs. Now, thanks to some third-graders at Woodbury’s Red Rock Elementary, the fire department will be waiting with tubs of toilet paper, shampoo and other items for local families. Students at the school recently collected items for Tara’s Totes, a Hudson, Wis.-based organization that collects items for families who have endured a house fire. “It was just a really nice project,” said Capt. Chris Klein of the Woodbury Fire Department, who now has four tubs waiting in the Public Safety building. “It’s basic household items to get them back and running.” A Red Rock student’s family was hit by a house fire …

Snapshot: Lightning Hits Woodbury Water Tower (Again)

The tower near Red Rock Elementary gets hit two or three times a year, according to a nearby resident.

While firefighters battled a blaze caused by a lightning strike at a Woodbury home on Tuesday, there was another lightning strike across town that didn’t cause as much commotion. During the midday storm at that came through Woodbury, lightning hit the water tower at Red Rock Elementary School, according to Brian Warford, who lives near the tower. “It sounded like somebody set off a stick of dynamite,” he said. The tower gets hit by lightning two or three times a year, said Warford, who built his home in the area 12-13 years ago. He works from home a few times a week, and was on the phone in his office Tuesday afternoon when a large orange and white flash of lightning struck outside his window.
