Fenton will continue to serve as Republican Party of Minnesota deputy chairwoman.
Minnesota Republican Party Deputy Chairwoman Kelly Fenton was recently re-elected to the post by the State Central Committee. “Pat Shortridge and I along with the staff, our many volunteers and candidates have worked very hard over the past year to recover our State Party and continue to move things forward,” Fenton said in a statement. “There is still much work to be done and I look forward to being a part of these efforts. We will work hard to take back the Governor’s Office, the State House and our U.S. Senate seat.” Fenton, of Woodbury, was re-elected by a vote of 251-90, according to a release. “I want to thank Pat for his leadership over the past year and wish him well in the future,” she said. “I look forward to working with our …

Gov. Mark Dayton unveiled his budget proposal Tuesday.
Woodbury’s lone Republican lawmaker wasn’t impressed, while the city’s two DFL legislators, part of a new majority at the Capitol, say the governor’s proposed budget is a good starting point. Dayton on Tuesday unveiled a proposed state budget and tax plan that would, among other things, lower Minnesota’s sales tax but broaden it to cover more items such as higher-priced clothing, car repairs and other services. He says it would also eliminate the state’s $1.1 billion budget deficit and balance government spending and revenue over the next two fiscal years. Rep. Andrea Kieffer, a Republican in her second term at the Legislature, said Gov. Mark Dayton’s budget “increases taxes all over the place.” “That’s not a big surprise,” she told Patch…

The DFL challenger beat incumbent Sen. Ted Lillie.
In the most closely contest legislative race in Woodbury this year, DFLer Susan Kent beat incumbent Sen. Ted Lillie for the Senate District 53 seat, according to the unofficial results from the Secretary of State. Kent notched 52.13 percent of the vote (22,781 total) to beat Lillie, who will finish out his freshman term before she is sworn in this January. Lillie, who had been tabbed as a rising leader in the Minnesota Republican party, had 47.73 percent of the vote (20,857). Woodbury is entirely within Senate District 53. Check back for updates. Ron Seiford, a financial adviser, says he would bring economic expertise to Congress.
The national debt is “the biggest issue of our time,” according to Woodbury resident Ron Seiford, who is running for the 4th Congressional District seat. The financial adviser is seeking the Republican nomination in the newly formed district, and says his economic acumen is what’s needed in Congress. “These are issues politicians should know and understand, and I don’t think they do,” he told Patch in an interview Wednesday. During his years as a financial adviser, Seiford said his clients would often note his passion for larger economic issues and encourage him to run for office, which he has never done before. He said he has spoken with Sen. Ted Lillie and Rep. Andrea Kieffer and believes they are good people doing good work. Seiford, 43…

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Is 6th District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann the next Margaret Thatcher? During her speech to the American Legion's national convention yesterday, the Republican presidential candidate invoked "The Iron Lady" in describing her own domestic and foreign policy goals: "We find ourselves today in search of another Margaret Thatcher to restore our great country to the thriving nation that I believe we can be again and as the leader for global peace, and through its resolute strength. But the good news is we can take our country back." You can watch her entire speech via the American Legion's website. A group of nurses held a mock press conference outside Bachmann's Woodbury office yesterday—complete with an eight-foot-high effigy of the …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Yesterday, sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann became the first Republican presidential candidate to come out against the plan proposed by U.S. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to increase the national debt limit. Bachmann has consistently opposed any plan to raise the debt ceiling, and the Des Moines Register reports that her stance reflects an ideological division within the Republican party that is "vexing Boehner's attempts to garner enough votes" to break the stalemate. Bachmann announced her opposition to the plan during a campaign stop in Iowa yesterday, where she said President Obama and other political leaders are "out of touch" with ordinary Americans. ABC News has more details and a video of her press conference. …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty continued their escalating war of words Monday, with Pawlenty hitting back over Bachmann's criticism last weekend of his record as governor. The Star Tribune says the former allies are now engaged in a pitched battle to win Republican support in the critical early caucus state of Iowa. The Des Moines Register fact-checks some of their recent statements about each other. Bachmann blasted President Obama's primetime TV address last night, calling his speech on the ongoing debt crisis "political gamesmanship." Obama urged Congress to raise the debt ceiling and adopt a "balanced approach" to eliminating the federal deficit, which Bachmann said "is code for higher taxes …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann traded barbs over the weekend with fellow presidential contender and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. On Friday, the Pawlenty campaign took an indirect jab at Bachmann with an email criticizing other candidates' lack of experience. Bachmann didn't mince words in her response, referring to Pawlenty as a "career politician" and slamming his record as governor. With the Aug. 13 Ames straw poll looming, Bachmann and Pawlenty are currently polling first and second, respectively, among Iowa Republicans. Bachmann holds a wide lead, but Politico says the state is still up for grabs. Starting today, TV stations in Iowa will begin airing ads for a straight-to-DVD movie that paints Bachmann as a hero …
