East Ridge High School to Host ‘Transition Fair’ for Seniors With Special Needs

The Woodbury school is hosting the fair for the first time this year.

There are more than 200 students at East Ridge High School enrolled in special-needs programs. And the decisions facing those who are graduating this spring are as varied as the students themselves. East Ridge High School for the first time this year will hold a “Transition Fair,” giving students and their parents the chance to hear from more than 40 vendors on everything from post-secondary education to housing options and job opportunities, said Rob Weberg, special education teacher at the Woodbury school. “There’s been a real need for it,” he said. The idea is to help connect special-needs students with community resources as they prepare for life after high school, Weberg said. The event is set for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at…

The Woodbury Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday held a ribbon cutting for the new business.

The two most popular services at Waxing the City? “Brows and Brazilians,” manager Lisa O’Brien said during a daylong event Tuesday at the new business. It’s the first Waxing the City location to open in Minnesota; the company has salons in Colorado and Texas. Waxing the City has been well received in the community since it opened Dec. 17, O’Brien said, and other businesses at CityWalk “have taken us under their wing.” The Woodbury Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Jan. 8, and grand-opening events continue Jan. 10-12. Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens welcomed Waxing the City to Woodbury, telling the assembled group: “I love their tagline: Get your smooth on.” A one-way sign is also part of its logo. “We do one thing …

Document: County Officials Outline Priority Programs Under Shutdown

The heads of four Washington County departments outlined what programs may have to be cut if the state government shutdown drags on.

According to Washington County Administrator Jim Schug, it’s a matter of calculating risk. The county can continue to provide state-mandated services, but officials are still unsure whether the cost of those services will be reimbursed by the state after the government shutdown. Against that backdrop, the heads of four county departments each presented a “decision matrix” that outlined which programs should stay and which may have to be cut in the event of a prolonged shutdown. (See the PDF with this story.) Some of the programs discussed at Tuesday’s board meeting are still being considered by the special master for inclusion on the “essential” services list for the state, Schug said. The matrices follow a previously stated county …

Minnesota Government Shuts Down: Back In Session

Gov. Mark Dayton and GOP leaders are working toward a budget deal that would end the state-record government shutdown.

(Updated, 5:35 p.m., Tuesday, July 19) The overarching message to Minnesotans is “Be ready.” That comes from Gov. Mark Dayton’s chief of staff, Tina Smith, and Minnesota Management and Budget commissioner Jim Schowalter. Smith and Schowalter sounded cautious optimism in a conference call with media on Tuesday afternoon. “There are a lot of assumptions right now,” Schowalter said. “But it is important to remind everyone that normal operations will not resume immediately. The bills must pass both bodies and then be signed into law by the governor.” Schowalter said that while the timing and enactment of the bills is still uncertain, after Dayton signs them, money will become available to the respective agencies. The money would not be …
