Washington County Wraps Up ‘One of the Best Ski Seasons Ever’

After a strong season, the Lake Elmo Park Reserve ski trails will close for the year on Thursday. Grooming ended earlier this week on the two trails still open in Lake Elmo Park Reserve, and trail lights will be turned off Wednesday.

With a forecast for warm weather, all Washington County Park ski trails will be closed starting Thursday, March 28. Grooming ended earlier this week on the two trails still open in Lake Elmo Park Reserve, and trail lights will be turned off Wednesday. After a slow start, the ski season on the Lake Elmo Park Reserve lighted trails proved very popular this season, as well as use of the Nordic Center, which opened to accommodate skiers this year. “This has been one of the best ski seasons ever,” Washington County Parks Manager Mike Polehna said. “We’ve had a remarkable response from people all over the metro commenting about how great the new Nordic Center and lighted ski trails are.” The money for the Nordic Center and lighted trails is the …

Woodbury 10-Year-Old to Compete in National Freestyle Skiing Event

A Liberty Ridge Elementary student, Cayden Wood is heading to Park City, Utah, next week for the USSA event.

Cayden Wood, an up and coming young skier from Woodbury, has been invited to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s junior nationals next week in Park City, Utah. The Liberty Ridge Elementary student will compete in “big air,” a freestyle jump competition, according to his father, Don Wood. “Quite the accomplishment for a 10-year-old,” he said. The USSA event runs March 4-10. In a summer 2012 interview with Patch, Cayden said his ultimate goal is to compete in the X Games and represent the U.S. in the Winter Games. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia will include slopestyle and halfpipe skiing for the first time. A Big Jump Toward His Olympic Dreams

Woodbury resident Cayden Wood, 10, is among the nation’s elite freestyle skiers.

The bespectacled Woodbury youngster twists his hands and shoulders, smiling, clearly excited as he explains his craft. “I like 540s,” he says. “With grabs. Because you’re going backwards, and that’s fun. But it’s not fun if you fall.” As most eyes are focused on the Summer Olympics, Cayden Wood is waiting for the snow to fall… and a shot to perhaps one day represent his country on the world’s biggest stage in the Winter Games. Cayden is among the top-ranked U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association freestyle skiers in the nation: he’s No. 66 in aerial and No. 86 in “slopestyle.” He’s 10 years old. (His 2002 birthdate is easy to find in the rankings.) “It’s really fun,” said Cayden, who will be fifth-grader at Liberty Ridge Elementary this fall. …

Waxed In Woodbury

If you’re not a winter wimp and want an activity your whole family can do, invest in skiing.

Winter has finally arrived. It’s time to go skiing! Not me of course. I don’t like to be cold or go fast. But I’m sure impressed with people who do. Adventurous Minnesotans benefit from this lifetime sport that encourages fitness, friendship and family time. But some aren’t satisfied with a meandering swoosh down those blankets of snow. For the past five years, 52-year-old Woodbury resident Wendy Loudas has been ski racing at Afton Alps. She’s not alone. A sport once dominated by men now includes many women seeking a ski challenge. Wendy learned to ski at age 6 when her family regularly visited Wild Mountain. By seventh grade she was racing for her school’s ski team. But as with many of us, recreation yielded to responsibility once life …

'Brown' Christmas In Store For Woodbury

Still, sales of skis and snowboards are steady at Woodbury's Play It Again Sports. "We know snow is coming," GM says. “It’s an inevitable force.”

It looks like Woodbury folks dreaming of a white Christmas might be out of luck. Forecasts call for sunny skies between now and Christmas, and the light dusting that hit Woodbury on Wednesday didn't amount to much. So what about people looking to enjoy outdoor activities? At Woodbury’s Play It Again Sports, general manager Greg Peterson said there has been a slight dip in the purchase of cross-country skis and snowshoes. “Obviously, you’re going to be dependent on Mother Nature,” he said. But otherwise, people are buying downhill skis, snowboards and skates at the same clip as previous years, Peterson said, noting that places like Afton Alps can make their own snow. “Most people—we know that snow is coming,” he said. “It’s an inevitable …

Celebrating A Winter Wonderland

For many Minnesotans, enjoying the season means hitting the slopes.

Though real snow is a bit late in making its way to Minnesota this year, that doesn’t mean the many ski hills in and around the Twin Cities aren’t ready for the season to start. There are several options for downhill skiing within an hour’s drive of Minneapolis. Let’s look at some of them: 15400 Buck Hill Road Burnsville, MN 55337 612-435-7174 Boasting a 310-foot vertical drop and 40 skiable acres, Buck Hill is the south metro’s go-to skiing spot. The ski season there opened the Monday before Thanksgiving, meaning that plenty of skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing fun awaits. Daytime lift tickets at Buck Hill start at $20, and daily lessons are offered at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to students age 6 and up of all ability levels. …

Lake Elmo Park Reserve To Get New Ski Trailhead

The Washington County Board approved a plan to construct a new building for the cross country ski trail.

It may be hot outside right now, but Washington County officials have winter on their minds. The Washington County Board on July 26 unanimously approved a new building for the Lake Elmo Park Reserve Winter Recreation Project. Approved is a new building to serve as the trailhead in the park. It replaces the previously approved plan to remodel an old barn along the trail. Greg Wood, building services director, told board members that original plan wasn’t feasible since the barn was built for agriculture, not to serve as a trailhead. So a new building will be constructed instead. Some of the features include large windows for warmth and lighting, a year-round restroom facility, a gathering area and a small sledding hill for young children. A …

Sports Roundup: Woodbury Defeats Park

Royals boys hockey win in Cottage Grove highlights local varsity schedule.

It was a busy, yet not highly successful, night for the local sports teams as the Woodbury boys hockey club claimed the lone win of the evening with a triumph at Park in an intra-district showdown. Boys Hockey: Woodbury 6, Park 4 The Woodbury boys hockey team never trailed, but never built a lead of comfort before winning 6-4 in a hotly contested matchup at Park. Ryan Winter and Matt Pederson gave the Royals a 2-0 first-period lead, which Evan Erickson built to 3-0 in the middle frame before the Wolfpack roared back to close the second period with two goals of their own to pull to within 3-2. Woodbury and Park traded goals to start the third period, with the Royals tally coming from Erickson, before Woodbury goals from Christian Turner and…
