South Washington County Adult Basic Education classes got a visit from Sen. Susan Kent last week.

Woodbury Sen. Susan Kent last week visited with recent immigrants looking to become citizens and others working to get a better handle on the English language. Kent, a first-term DFLer, visited two South Washington County Adult Basic Education classes on Friday, April 5. Adult Basic Education (ABE), part of District 833 Community Education, works to help people with job searches and retraining, along with courses on English and computer skills, said Susie Evans, ABE coordinator. Recently Approved Cuts to Bus Routes Draws Reaction from Woodbury Parents

Students at South Washington County high schools would have to walk up to 2 miles under the current proposal, approved by the school board late last month.

District 833 last month approved the "Hybrid" budget option, which increases the classroom teacher staffing ratio by one student, increases walking distances for middle schools from 1 to 1.5 miles and the high schools from 1.5 to 2 miles, and reduces district support services staff by the equivalent four full-time jobs. Superintendent Keith Jacobus told the board that the Hybrid option, which helped trim about $2 million from the district budget, responded to feedback received from community and staff throughout the service level process. But what’s concerning local parents have expressed concerns about walking distances. The more than mile-long walk is raising eyebrows, according to a story reported by KSTP.com Tuesday, April 2. And for …

This neglects to mention that the additional operating costs would run a FREE building for Dist. 833. This taxpayer would take that deal any day of the week. It prevents – or at least delays – all of our taxes going up to pay for new construction of a school.   more ›

Cold Slows Buses for District 833

The frigid temperatures caused 15 buses to experience “fuel gelling,” according to South Washington County Schools.

The bitter cold that descended on Woodbury and the state caused issues for District 833 buses on Tuesday morning. Fifteen buses experienced “fuel gelling,” which caused them to stall after they left for their regular runs, according to a notice from South Washington County Schools. (Transportation officials were out on Monday and early Tuesday ensuring the buses would start.) How Will New Development in Woodbury Impact Local Schools?

South Washington County Schools officials are continually apprised of new development plans in area cities.

As Woodbury prepares for 6,000 new homes in the Phase 2 area of the city over the next decade, District 833 officials are keeping an eye on future attendance needs. Mike Vogel, assistant to the superintendent for operations, said South Washington County Schools officials meet regularly with Woodbury and Cottage Grove leaders about future growth. Woodbury’s Phase 2 is near East Ridge High School, but Vogel said he doesn’t expect the new development will have much of an impact at the high school in the near term. “Most families don’t move when their kids are at that age,” he said. Instead, the district expects the immediate need to come at the elementary and middle school levels. Much of Phase 2 falls in the Bailey Elementary boundary, Vogel…
