Service Planned for Andrew Sommer at Woodbury High School

The Spanish teacher died Dec. 19, 2012.

A service for Andrew Sommer, the Woodbury High School teacher who died earlier this month, will be held at the school at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, according to an obituary on legacy.com. Sommer passed away Dec. 19, 2012, after a battle with cancer. He was 54. The service at Woodbury High School will be held in the auditorium. “We are mourning the loss of our colleague and friend. He remains an outstanding member of the Woodbury High School faculty, touching the lives of countless students, staff and parents,” Principal Linda Plante said in a statement. “As a College in the Schools Spanish instructor, Andy brought rigor to the classroom, and laughter and joy to his students. Woodbury High School teacher Andrew (Andy) Sommer, who had been battling cancer, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, 2012. “We are mourning the loss of our colleague and friend. He remains an outstanding member of the Woodbury High School faculty, touching the lives of countless students, staff and parents,” Principal Linda Plante said in a statement. “As a College in the Schools Spanish instructor, Andy brought rigor to the classroom, and laughter and joy to his students. Spanish Instead of Chinese at Liberty Ridge Elementary

The school recently sent out a notice to parents about a change to its world language offering.

Spanish will be taught at Liberty Ridge Elementary in Woodbury instead of Chinese this upcoming school year. The school recently sent out a notice to parents about the change: At the end of last year our Mandarin Chinese teachers, Ms. Song and Ms. Liu, sought personal opportunities out of state. Building and district personnel spent months trying to recruit and hire high-quality teachers to replace them. Part of the difficulty is also the state-required licensure for Mandarin teachers.   We truly exhausted all sources of where we have received candidates in the past.  With that said, the board has made it clear of the importance of offering world language exposure in the elementary schools.
