Zach Sobiech Will Perform at Benefit Concert Feb. 16 at the Varsity Theater

The event will benefit the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund. His girlfriend is from Woodbury.

Singer Zach Sobiech will perform during a benefit concert Feb. 16 at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis. Rock the Cause, KS95, Children's Cancer Research Fund and the Varsity Theater recently announced that they will host "Up, Up, Up. A Concert for Zach," benefiting the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund. Sobiech will perform with his bandmates Sammy Brown and Reed Redmon (Firm Handshake) and Washington-based singer Vicci Martinez. During the event, Rock the Cause will also release a digital version of Sobiech and Brown’s new album, "Fix Me Up," the Pioneer Press reports. Zach recently signed a record deal with BMI; and he and his mother, Laura, are working on a video to accompany the title track of his new album. Zach, 17, a senior at …

Seen on Youtube: Stillwater Graduate's Cutaway Productions Video Project Goes Viral

Joey Bush, a 2012 Stillwater Area High School graduate, posted a youtube video titled, "Our Story in Two Minutes" about a month ago, and has since gotten more than 434,400 views and 560 comments.

A 2012 Stillwater Area High School graduate’s final Cutaway Productions project titled, “Our Story in Two Minutes” has gone viral. Joey Bush posted the video on YouTube about a month ago, and has since gotten more than 434,400 views and 560 comments. Bush set the video to the song “Mind Heist” by Zack Hemsey and gathered photos from all over the Internet to show the story of the world (from a westerners’ vantage point as one commenter points out). "When I first saw this video, I thought it was great, but I didn't think it would create this much interest," Cutaway Productions instructor Debbie Drew said. Police: Wrestler's Mom Punches Stillwater Assistant Coach in the Face During Woodbury Meet

The coach told police the woman was interfering with the wrestlers before she punched him in the face during a meet last week at Woodbury High School. He did not report any injures and wanted the incident documented.

The mother of a Stillwater Area High School wrestler allegedly punched a Ponies assistant wrestling coach in the face twice after being told “the bench is no place for parents.” The coach told police the woman was interfering with the wrestlers before she punched him in the face during a meet last week at Woodbury High School, according to a police report. He did not report any injures and wanted the incident documented. The woman left the high school before Woodbury police arrived.  Stillwater Athletic Director Ricky Michel said it was an internal matter that has since been taken care of.

REPLAY: Ponies Trample the Raptors 33-6

The Stillwater Ponies will take on the East Ridge Raptors for the first time in school history.

After a first half that was filled with missed opportunities, Stillwater took advantage of the final 24 minutes in a big way to beat East Ridge 33-6 at Pony Stadium. It marked the first time the two schools played each other in football and the first half appeared to foreshadow a close affair. Stillwater made the move to put Nate Ricci back at quarterback and he took over, scoring two touchdowns on the ground in the third quarter and connected with Charlie Register for a 54-yard score on the first play in the fourth quarter to open up a huge lead for the Ponies. “At halftime we said we wanted to run the ball against the wind and go to the pass in the fourth,” Ricci said. “That is pretty much how it played out.” With the Ponies leading 6-0 …

Girls Tennis: East Ridge Drops One to Stillwater

A young East Ridge tennis team put up a gallant effort, but lost to the Ponies 6-1 Thursday afternoon at Stillwater Area High School.

The East Ridge girls tennis team played Stillwater tough Thursday afternoon, but lost 6-1. Junior Maddie Blake pulled off the Raptors one victory by beating Savannah Johnson (5-7) (6-4) (11-9) in three sets. Woodbury High School Has New Activities Director

Jason Gonnion says he’s excited to come to a school with a “strong tradition of excellence.”

Jason Gonnion—the new activities director at Woodbury High School—was a Division I football player at the University of Wisconsin. He also was an actor in the spring play at his high school in southern Wisconsin. “I was a dreadful singer,” he said. Gonnion, currently a dean of students at Forest Lake High School, said he’s excited to come to Woodbury and looks forward to building on a “strong tradition of excellence.” The school’s former activities director, Jason Schultz, recently took a job as an assistant principal at Cottage Grove Middle School. Gonnion has been involved in fine arts at Forest Lake, was the head coach of the Stillwater Area High School golf team and served as a volunteer football coach at Stillwater. In addition, he …

Woodbury girls compile 133 points for second place, East Ridge 76 for fourth, in Thursday's meet.

The Woodbury and East Ridge girls swimming and diving teams competed at the Suburban East Conference relays Thursday at Stillwater Junior High School. Woodbury took second place overall with 138 points, and East Ridge took fourth with 76 points. Stillwater won the meet at 154 points, and Mounds View finished third with 112 points. Woodbury highlights included: The 200 freestyle relay team—Mara Miler, Addie Nelson, Megan Graupmann and Kristina Swanson—finished first at 1:45.61. The 400 medley relay team—Ana Sortland, Maddie Norsten, Kelsie Carter and Kasey Bosch—took third at 4:35.14. The diving team took first with 204.30 points. Stillwater Downs East Ridge Lacrosse 5-3

The Raptors were penalized for protesting missed calls.

The East Ridge boys lacrosse team lost 5-3 on Wednesday to Suburban East Conference rival Stillwater. Tied 2-2 at the half, the Ponies scored two goals in third quarter and one in the fourth while holding the Raptors to only a single goal. The fourth quarter was marked by two bench penalties against the Raptors after the East Ridge coaching staff strongly questioned officials about missed calls.

For Woodbury Resident, March Madness is 'Crazy Exciting'

Taylor Stippel is getting a serious taste of March Madness. The freshman forward—and her No. 3 ranked Michigan Tech Huskies (29-2)—are gearing up for Elite Eight play in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament tonight, March 22. The Huskies will play No. 1 ranked Arkansas Tech (30-2) at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center in St. Joseph, Mo. The game will be streamed online at NCAA.com. Stippel, formerly of Woodbury, is a 2009 graduate of Stillwater Area High School, where she averaged 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks per game as a senior for the Ponies. New Life boys win big in conference tournament as Woodbury splits with Forest Lake and East Ridge swept by Stillwater.

Basketball teams from Woodbury, East Ridge and New Life Academy inched one game closer to the end of the regular season with conference matchups on Tuesday night. Woodbury Girls Basketball: Royals 57, Forest Lake 40 The Woodbury girls basketball team built a 30-14 halftime lead en route to a 57-40 home win over Forest Lake to improve to 18-6 overall and 14-3 in Suburban East Conference play. Behind a game-high 29 points from Michelle Young and 13 points from Royals teammate Kristina White, the Royals took over sole control of second place in the Suburban East standings with one game left to play in the conference slate.
