We get far to few opportunities to vote for someone who has demonstrated and lives their commitment to the improvement of society. In Senate District 53, Susan Kent is that person and deserves our support. She is a dedicated parent leader in our local schools to improve the quality of educational opportunities for our young people. As a retired superintendent in District 833, I worked closely with Susan on key education programs in our schools. I know her as someone who is tough, dedicated, and will always put the interests of students first. Over the years I have heard numerous legislators talk the talk about how their No. 1 priority is supporting our local schools, but in reality, once they get to St. Paul these individuals put …

The outgoing superintendent is heading to a Florida Keys district, accoring to keysnet.com.
Outgoing District 833 Superintendent Mark Porter will be the new head of schools in a Florida school district, according to a report. The advertised start date is Aug. 1, with a salary of between $125,000 and $150,000, according to the story on keysnet.com. The South Washington County School Board last December opted not to renew Porter’s contract. He had spent 32 years in the district. The board has selected Dr. Keith Jacobus to take over; he starts July 2. Porter beat out three three other candidates for the job in a 4-1 vote by the Monroe County School Board, the keysnet.com report says. Superintendent Mark Porter has spent 32 years in District 833. And folks wanted to recognize him for his service. “We told him, you really need to give the community an opportunity to say thanks—and that’s just not Mark’s style,” said Vicki Strong, one of several residents heading up the event. The only way Porter would agree to an event was if it could also function as a fundraiser for Berean Missional Church/Harvest Academy, which works with at-risk youth on the eastside of St. Paul. “This could be a pretty good collaboration,” Porter said, adding that he and his wife Jane have been involved with the nonprofit for the past seven or eight years. Dr. Keith Jacobus, set to take over as District 833 superintendent on July 1, replaces Mark Porter, who recently settled a contract dispute that prevents him from filing a lawsuit against the district, according to a report. District 833 is one step closer to having a new superintendent after two finalists were named after Saturday’s interviews. The district will chose between Lolli Haws and Keith Jacobus to replace Superintendent Mark Porter, whose contract the school board opted not to renew last December. Currently instructional superintendent for District of Columbia Public Schools, Washington D.C., Haws also has experience as an elementary school principal in the Virginia and Missouri. Her career started in Intermediate District 287, Minnesota, as a teacher. Interviews with the seven candidates up for the District 833 superintendent position will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the District Service Center in Cottage Grove. One of the eight candidates, Keith Rittel, has accepted a job in Utah, according to a release from the district. The South Washington County School Board will meet for a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at the District Service Center in Cottage Grove to hear the slate of superintendent candidates culled from the search committee, School Exec Connect, according to a release from District 833.
