A group of area residents have started up a local Tea Party organization.
A group of area residents have founded an east metro Tea Party organization, which will hold its first event Thursday, April 4, at the Machine Shed in Lake Elmo. The local group will be focused on “entertainment and education,” according to a release about the upcoming event, which kicks off with a social hour at 6 p.m. Thursday. It will be held in the Windmill Room at the restaurant, and the main program is set for 7-9 p.m. The event will feature presentations on “the gun debate at the Capitol, the exploding debt situation in the U.S. and a short history lesson on the Constitution,” according to the release. Former 4th District Congressional candidate Tony Hernandez will co-host the event with Minnesota Tea Party leaders Jack Rogers and …

An aggregated weekly roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann will be seeking a fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives though it’s still unclear how redistricting will affect congressional boundaries. Bachmann is the only major former candidate for the Republican nomination who has not yet endorsed either Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich. "I am on board the team, put it that way, no matter who our nominee will be, I am on the team because I intend to make sure that Barack Obama is a one-term president and whoever our nominee is, I am for them," she said Sunday on Face the Nation. Bachmann was named as a witness for the defense in a multimillion dollar lawsuit against Tea Party HD, a Tea Party-funded television project. Tea Party HD produced Bachmann…

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
A group of conservative Christians in Iowa started pounding the pavement Tuesday in an effort to get Republicans to caucus for “biblically qualified” sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann on Jan. 3. “She is capable. She is trustworthy. She fears God, and she hates dishonest gain,” former state Rep. Danny Carroll of Grinnell, Iowa, said Tuesday at a news conference attended by the Sioux City Journal. “Frankly, we're looking to shake things up a little bit.” In South Carolina, Bachmann has grown her Tea Party coalition to more than 50 members. “I once was a strong Perry supporter. Now, as we move closer to the election, I see that Michele Bachmann’s consistent conservative record is what our country needs. …

An aggregated daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
A new lawsuit is a requesting that sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann return more than $27,000 in funds that were transferred to her political committees by Frank Vennes, Jr., who’s been charged in a security fraud case related to Tom Petters’ Ponzi scheme. The “clawback” lawsuit was filed last week in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of Florida. Meanwhile, in a telephone conference call with supporters, Bachmann called herself the “one, true core-conservative in this race” and slammed her opponents. "We're really down to just a few candidates that are viable and today Newt Gingrich is number one in the polls and Mitt Romney is also up in the polls and Ron Paul also has a following,” she …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann is no stranger to harsh criticism, but the latest attack on her presidential campaign comes from a surprising source: tea partiers. In what appears to be a first for any of the GOP candidates, a national tea party group blasted Bachmann's candidacy yesterday and called on her to abandon her run for the White House. Ned Ryun, president of American Majority, said in a blog post that Bachmann's campaign "has become less about reform and more about her personal effort to stay relevant and sell books." He said her troubled campaign is damaging the tea party movement's credibility. CNN quotes other tea party leaders who say they disagree with Ryun's critique. Still, it's an unusual turn of events for…

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is in Iowa again today, where she's been touring factories to promote conservative economic policies. MPR and The Star Tribune have the latest news from the campaign trail. During a campaign stop in her hometown of Waterloo, Bachmann gave a rough outline of her approach to national health care policy: eliminating employer-based health insurance and creating a national insurance market. Bachmann's former campaign manager, Ed Rollins, offered some surprisingly candid—some would say "harsh"—thoughts on her odds of winning the GOP nomination. In an interview on MSNBC, Rollins said it's all over for Bachmann unless she wins Iowa. Here's the quote: "She doesn't have the …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann and video.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is campaigning in Iowa today, where she will tour a pair of factories and host "employee roundtable" discussions. MPR reports some prominent Iowa conservatives want Bachmann to ditch her highly-coreographed campaign style and "get her shoes dirty." Otherwise, they say she risks losing ground to rival Rick Perry in the state. On Friday, Bachmann appeared on The Tonight Show, where she was interviewed by host Jay Leno, who asked about a number of her recent campaign controversies. (Watch Part 1 and Part 2 of the interview.) The tone of the interview was respectful, but Leno was clearly skeptical of many of her views. The HPV vaccine controversy, the tea party and gay …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is in California today, where she will address the state Republican Party's convention in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Bachmann's vaccine brouhaha is showing no signs of letting up. During a stop in San Rafael, she defended her controversial remarks regarding alleged dangers posed by the HPV vaccine Gardasil, and offered no apologies to those who say her comments might serve to discourage parents from having their children vaccinated. In a scathing opinion piece, a Salon writer castigates Bachmann for her remarks, and points out that she's ironically giving voice to a widely discredited "liberal conspiracy theory" about vaccines causing autism. MPR says Bachmann…

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann injected herself back into the national conversation this week with some controversial comments on vaccines—but critics say her words could end up being a poison pill for her campaign. At Monday night's debate, Bachmann scored some big political points by criticizing Texas Gov. Rick Perry's 2007 executive order requiring adolescent girls to be vaccinated for the sexually transmitted disease HPV. So far, so good for Bachmann. Following the debate, however, she appeared on Fox News and NBC, where she related a story suggesting that the vaccine in question might be linked to "mental retardation" in children. And that's where the trouble started. The notion that the …

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sixth-district Congresswoman Michele Bachmann worked her way back into the spotlight during last night's Republican presidential debate in Florida. You can watch the full video of the debate or the abbreviated "greatest hits" version via CNN's website. The consensus among critics this morning is that Bachmann acquitted herself well. After last week's muted debate performance in California, many argued Bachmann needed to inject herself back into the conversation. Last night, she did just that, hitting hard against frontrunner Rick Perry and reclaiming her mantle as a tea party superstar. The Washington Post and The Houston Chronicle are among those placing Bachmann in the "winners" category from last night's debate. The Chronicle had this …

Oh CB, this is not an accurate comparison. Biden certainly has "insert foot into mouth syndrome", but he doesn't lie and distort the truth so terribly with an intention of putting fear into the American people. He doesn't accuse top aids of top officials of being in cahoots with the Muslim Brotherhood. He doesn't make crazy and inaccurate statements about vaccines causing mental retardation and …   more ›
