Woodbury Man Sentenced for Voting as Felon

The man, who voted in the 2010 election, was previously convicted of burglary.

A convicted felon from Woodbury was sentenced to three years of probation after authorities discovered he voted in the 2010 election. Steven Larry Richie, 58, admitted that he voted at St. John Lutheran Church in the Nov. 2, 2010, election, according to the criminal complaint. In a July 2011 interview with police, Richie acknowledged he was on probation, but he “did not consider himself to be a convicted felon,” the complaint says. Court records show that he was convicted of burglary in 2007 and sentenced to five years of probation in early 2008. Investigators found that he completed a voter-registration card but also registered the same day at the church, according to the complaint. The Washington County Elections Division requested the …

Polling Place Rules and Etiquette

Can you bring your children with you? Can you wear a campaign button for your favorite candidate or issue? Here are some polling place rules from the Secretary of State's Office.

Voting isn't as easy as showing up and checking a few boxes. There are things you cannot do when you vote in an election. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers from the Secretary of State's Office: Q: Can I bring my child with me when I vote on Election Day?  A: Yes. A voter may bring their children with them to a polling place and the children may go with the parent into the voting booth. Q: May I bring a sample ballot from my political party or the newspaper into my polling place? A: Yes. Voters may bring a sample ballot from a newspaper or campaign flyer into the voting booth, as long as they take great care to conceal the material from other voters while outside the voting booth and take it with them when they leave. Q: …

One more item. Via FOX9 on Twitter: MPR is reporting that Secretary of State Ritchie says it is legal to take a pic of your ballot and share, just strongly discouraged.   more ›

What’s Happening on Election Day in Woodbury?

What have you seen around town today? Long lines? Deals at stores or restaurants for wearing an “I Voted” sticker? Tell us in the comments section.

At Woodbury City Hall on Election Day, more people had voted by 9 a.m. than did the entire day in 2010, said Dan Nalipinski, election judge.  Still, voters were being ushered through the queue fairly smoothly.  “We know how it works. We’ve got everything covered,” said Nalipinski, who has been an election judge since 2006. “We don’t anticipate any hitches in the giddy-up.” However, two ballots had been kicked out of the machine, he said, one when someone filled in too many names and another because of a stray mark. What have you seen around town on Election Day? Tell us in the comments section. Also, if you have photos of “I Voted” stickers or long lines or anything interesting related to the election, add them to this post. Just hit the “…

Angela's Angle

In Woodbury, Forming Informed Political Opinions

I’m hopeful that we can look past the pomposity of political speech. Feel free to speak our minds. Ask our questions. Seek truth. And cast our votes.

Lawn signs, attack ads, political debates and polls that either elevate or devastate all hopes of vindication. The political season can get extremely annoying. It’s difficult to avoid breathing the foul-smell of politically polluted air. But I’m suggesting that you inhale a lung full. Instead of being turned-off and tuned out, go beyond allowing your opinions to be shaped by personalities and pundits. Nov. 6 is Election Day. And it’s too important to ignore. I’ve heard people say that they don’t like hyperbolic political television commercials. I agree. I mean, seriously, does anyone featured in fuzzy black and white footage with Halloween horror movie music playing in the background really want to destroy America? Or kick puppies? I doubt…

Woodbury Sets New Precinct Lines

The city will now have one additional precinct, following the Woodbury City Council's approval Wednesday night.

At the state level, it took months for a judicial panel to sort out redistricting proposals. In Woodbury, they left it to the city clerk, and the city council approved the changes in a matter of minutes. Kim Blaeser gave a quick rundown of how she redrew the city’s precinct boundaries, and the Woodbury City Council unanimously approved the changes Wednesday night. Because of the population growth in the city over the past decade, Woodbury now has one new precinct, bringing the total number up to 16, Blaeser said. (Redistricting is done every 10 years in conjunction with the U.S. Census.) Blaeser talked about how precincts must not cross legislative or congressional lines, and generally follow major landmarks and not split up neighborhoods…

Stay Inside The Lines: Woodbury Redrawing Precinct Boundaries

The city, following redistricting, must have its new precinct lines in place by April 3.

Just as legislative and congressional districts have been redrawn in the wake of redistricting, so too must Woodbury rework its precinct lines. Part of the requirements for cities is that no precinct can be spread across more than legislative or congressional district, said City Clerk Kim Blaeser, who is heading up Woodbury’s effort.     What redistricting means for Woodbury Since the changes announced last month, Woodbury is now represented by just one congressional district, the Fourth, and the line between its respective House members’ districts is drawn mostly down Radio Drive. The city tries to keep the population of each precinct—which indicates where people vote—under 3,000 voters, Blaeser said, and the lines are drawn around major …
