Brian Schulenburg and Darrin Geier, pastors at Woodbury Community Church, visited Haiti the week after Thanksgiving. “I went to Haiti looking for ways our church could help and I was overwhelmed by what I saw and learned,” Schulenburg said. Since their return, the pair has been working to share their experiences with people, encourage them to give or go, and planning how to involve their congregation in helping build a brighter tomorrow for the Haitian people. Schulenburg and Geier were joined in Haiti by six other pastors from across the country as part of a Senior Pastor’s trip hosted by World Wide Village (WWV) of St. Paul. Any other Woodbury churches broadcast their services live over the Internet?
Patch on Tuesday posted an item from Woodbury’s King of Kings Lutheran Church about new live webcasts of its Sunday services. Being in touch with Brian Schulenburg, head pastor at Woodbury Community Church, for a piece on a member’s work in Haiti, he alerted Patch to the fact that WCC has been webcasting services live for the past couple of years. Folks from as far away as New Zealand, Israel, the Netherlands, Tanzania and Thailand have watched them—and some families outside Woodbury gather to check out the Woodbury Community Church services on the web, he said. Woodbury resident Sara Lein is working to improve educational opportunities for youngsters in the Caribbean nation.
Sara Lein was once at a Bethel University conference with some of the youth at Woodbury Community Church. The speaker said: “Do something radical.” So Lein left herself a note: “Go to Haiti for a month.” She did, and is now involved with Kozefó, a nonprofit working to improve opportunities for education for young people in the Caribbean nation. Lein, joined by her daughter Breelynn, traveled to Haiti last summer, teaching English at the orphanage where her two adopted nephews are from. She went back in December 2011 and is planning an Aug. 18 5K benefit for Kozefó through Woodbury Community Church.
