Woodbury Looks to Hire New Firefighter/EMTs

Applications can be found at Woodbury City Hall.

The Woodbury Fire Department is now accepting applications for firefighter/EMTs. The department is looking to hire up to 16 people for the paid-on-call night-responder positions, said Fire Cmdr. John Wallgren. Applications are available at City Hall and are due by May 3. The Woodbury FD is facing retirements, and other firefighters are moving out of the community, Wallgren said. “We’ve been monitoring our numbers and we did not have a fall hire,” he said. Applicants must be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. People will have to undergo a background check and a psychological evaluation, Wallgren said. Firefighter/EMTs are being hired at all four stations:   Like Patch on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up …

Pets Saved, Crews Use New Tactic in Woodbury House Fire

The fire struck a home on Timberlea Drive on Dec. 23.

A Woodbury police officer suffered a minor injury while breaking a window to save a pet from a home that caught fire Dec. 23, and the fire department also broke out a new tactic to battle the blaze. The call about the house fire, at the 2500 block of Timberlea Drive, came in at 2:20 p.m., and crews were on scene just a few minutes later, said Todd Johnson, Woodbury fire chief. The fire appears to have started in the garage, and the blaze engulfed a boat in the driveway, as well. The cause remains under investigation. The homeowners were away at the time. Still, many of the family’s possessions were saved because firefighters used an “exterior offensive attack,” Johnson said. “It was successful in this case,” he said. The ranking …

Fire Tears Hole in Roof of Farmhouse on Woodbury Drive

The fire department got the call at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27.

Woodbury crews battled a house fire, as well as the elements, at the 4500 block of Woodbury Drive early Thursday morning. The fire was mostly contained to the attic of the old farmhouse, and investigators are focusing on the chimney as a possible cause, said Todd Johnson, Woodbury fire chief. “The attic was fully involved,” he said. The call came in from the homeowner at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and firefighters were at the house until 7 a.m. Older homes are typically built with heavier lumber, which burns longer, Johnson said. Crews were on the scene for several hours to ensure it didn’t rekindle. No one were hurt, but four people were displaced as a result of the fire, and the Red Cross was working to assist the family, Johnson said. …

Holiday Lights Spark Fire on Arlington Drive in Woodbury

The Woodbury Fire Department was able to contain the fire to the room where it started.

An electric candle—part of holiday decorations—sparked a fire at a Woodbury home Tuesday night. The fire broke out at the 3800 block of Arlington Drive, but it was a “quick knockdown” and crews were able to limit the fire to an upstairs bedroom, said Mike Richardson, emergency services commander. The electric candle started a curtain on fire, he said. No one was hurt. The department got the call at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and crews were back at the station by 9 p.m., Richardson said. “No major damage to the house,” he said. Richardson sent Patch these links regarding fire safety during the holidays: http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/PDF/Public%20Education/Winter_Holiday_Safety.pdf http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/Public%20Education/…

Hot Enough for Ya? How the Woodbury FD Battles Fires During the Heat

With temperatures in the mid-90s expected to continue this week, Patch asked Woodbury firefighters how they beat the heat.

It’s hard enough sitting outside with a glass of lemonade when the thermometer hits the mid-90s... Try strapping on more than 40 pounds of equipment and attacking a fire. For the Woodbury Fire Department, staying ahead of the heat takes tactics, preparation and a whole lot of water. “Stay hydrated before you get into your gear, because you’re not going to be able to catch up in this heat,” firefighter Russ Hawkinson said Monday. It’s important for a firefighter to “know your body,” he said, and not push too hard. “Because the heat’s going to win," Hawkinson said. During hot summer days, the fire department packs coolers full of ice water, but also keeps tabs on how long a firefighter is battling a blaze. Firefighters rotate between …

Woodbury Looks to Renew Cop-Firefighter Program

The unique program, aimed at improving response times for fires, was previously curtailed by budget constraints.

It’s not exactly the phone booth that City Administrator Clint Gridley joked about. But having certain police officers change into their firefighting gear at the back of their vehicles when a blaze breaks out is critical to response times for the Woodbury Fire Department, officials said during a City Council workshop Wednesday. Woodbury is one of about 250 cities nationwide that cross-trains police officers as firefighters. The city began the program in 2005, but it was halted in 2009 because of budget constraints. It costs $2,850 to cross-train and equip a police officer as a firefighter. The Public Safety Department is hoping to renew the program. “This is very much an unfinished piece of business for us,” said Public Safety Chief Lee …

Department Uses New Tactic to Battle House Fire

The Woodbury Fire Department is the only one in the region to use the method, fire chief says.

Battling a house fire might seem like a chaotic event. For the Woodbury Fire Department, putting out Monday’s house fire on Pheasant Run Road was “almost like a theatrical performance,” said Deputy Public Safety Director Todd Johnson. The department used a new tactic in which firefighters place high-powered fans at the entrance and exit, clearing smoke and heat so crews can more closely focus on the flames, Johnson told Patch at the scene Monday.       Related: Fire Hits Home on Pheasant Run Road The Woodbury Fire Department is the only one in the region to use the method, Johnson said, and local firefighters planned to demonstrate it for their counterparts during a training event tonight (April 24) in St. Paul. In addition to helping …

A resident incurred “significant” injuries Thursday night after suffering from smoke inhalation during a car fire at Tamarack Hills in Woodbury. The gender and city of residence of the person wasn’t immediately available. The individual was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Woodbury FD Puts Out Garage Fire

The fire broke out just before midnight on Feb. 23; no one was injured.

It took the Woodbury Fire Department about 20 minutes to put out a garage fire that started at a townhome just before midnight on Feb. 23. No one was injured in the incident at the four-unit townhome on Cypress Drive in Woodbury, said Fire Capt. Chris Klein. The fire originated in one of the townhome’s garages and caused significant smoke damage to that unit. Other townhomes sustained some smoke damage, as well, though it was mostly contained to the garages, Klein said. It isn’t clear how the fire started, he said. The residents were home at the time of the blaze, but they, along with their pets, escaped unharmed, Klein said. “It was just a good job by the crews,” he said. The fire brought in all available Woodbury Fire Department trucks, …

Burning Smell Prompts Evacuation Of Woodbury’s Bailey Elementary

No students were injured in the incident; an HVAC unit apparently overheated.

Bailey Elementary in Woodbury was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a mechanical problem with a rooftop ventilation unit caused a burning odor in the building. No one was injured. The Woodbury Fire Department got the call at about 12:30 p.m., said Sgt. John Altman with the Woodbury Police Department. Firefighters responded after school officials noticed the smell of something burning in the building, he said. Once the cause of the odor was determined, students were allowed back into the school’s gym. Woodbury Fire Cmdr. John Wallgren said there was some smoke in the building, but firefighters were quickly able to determine the cause. Crews were on scene for about an hour, Altman said. Firefighters did not put any water or chemicals on …
