Woodbury Football ‘Gears Up’ for Garage Sale

The football team is participating in this year’s Woodbury Lions Community Garage Sale for the first time as part of an effort to raise funds for the program.

The Woodbury High School football team is hosting a garage sale as a way to raise money for “everything from coaching to equipment to socks,” says Julie Bunch, who helps with promotions. “It’s just something new we’re trying this year,” she said. Team members and parents have been working to get things ready for the Woodbury Lions Community Garage Sale, which runs May 9-11. The football team is holding its sale at 1592 Tamberwood Trail: As might be expected, there’s a good deal of sports equipment that will be available at the sale, along with typical items such as antiques, household goods and electronics, Bunch said. Photos: Woodbury High School Puts on 'Our Town'

Performances of the classic play begin Thursday, May 2.

Woodbury High School theater students will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Our Town starting Thursday, May 2. Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder, tells the story of the everyday lives of people in the fictional town of Grover's Corners during the in the early 20th century. Directed by Jon and Karen Seashore, performances are set for 7 p.m. at the high school: Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students. Complaint Leveled Against Woodbury High School Baseball Coach

Because of state data practices law, school officials were unable to elaborate on the situation, but the district did take administrative action.

South Washington County Schools completed an investigation regarding a complaint against the Woodbury High School baseball coach and “appropriate administrative actions have been taken.” Coach Kevin McDermott did not immediately return a phone call Monday seeking comment. Patch contacted Jason Gonnion, Woodbury High School activities director, who said via email: A recent complaint was made against the coach, and the district completed an investigation into the allegations. I've heard way too many stories from people not in a position to judge what a coach is actually doing who come forward and say so-n-so is a great guy. Woodbury Poetry Champ Headed Back to National Competition

Woodbury High School senior Yemi Ajagbe is headed back to Washington, D.C., after taking top billing in her second straight Minnesota Poetry Out Loud competition.

After a successful run to the top in 2012 in the Minnesota Poerty Out Loud competition, Yemi Ajagbe was thrilled just to be in Washington, D.C., last year for the national Poetry Out Loud stage.  Now, she's headed back for a second straight year.  Yemi, a senior at Woodbury High School, was the second straight Woodbury student to make the competition when she did it last year, following up Wesley Taylor, who made the national finals in 2011. Yemi will compete in the nation's capital this weekend, with opening rounds starting Sunday, April 28. It wraps up with final rounds Tuesday, April 30.  A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is awarded annually at the national competition, according to the Woodbury Bulletin. Last year’s …

Snapshot: Woodbury Public Safety, WHS Staff Play Basketball for Link Crew

The annual charity game was held Wednesday night at Woodbury High School.

Woodbury High School staff squared off on the hardwood against members of the Woodbury Public Safety Department for a Wednesday night fundraiser to benefit the Link Crew. The Link Crew at WHS works to connect upperclassmen with freshmen as the younger students transition to high school. The basketball game was fun and lighthearted, and one WHS staffer dressed up in a beard and sweatpants, at times limping around using a cane (not on the court). The staff at Woodbury High School put together a little trash-talking video beforehand, but the public safety team came out on top. Still, in the end, the game was all about supporting the Link Crew. Woodbury High School Grad Named to Ultimate National Team

Sandy Jorgensen, a 2005 Woodbury High School graduate and member of the DC Scandal team, has earned a spot on the 2013 USA National Ultimate Team that will participate in the 2013 World Games this summer.

A 2005 Woodbury High School graduate has been named to the 20-member 2013 USA Ultimate National Team, according to a news release issued by the organization. Sandy Jorgensen is a member of the DC Scandal team, which placed third at nationals last year. She is currently attending Georgetown Law School and expects to graduate in May. Jorgensen has accepted a position with the Stewart and Stewart law firm. According to the news release, the team will particpate in the 2013 World Games this summer: The World Games are scheduled to take place July 25-August 4. Ultimate teams from six nations will compete in the three-day flying disc tournament July 28-30. Participating teams will represent Australia, Canada, Colombia, Great Britain, Japan and …

‘Legends and Heroes’ Event in Woodbury: Video Slideshow

The District 833 Community Education event honoring Jackie Robinson was held Monday, March 18, at Woodbury High School.

District 833 Community Education and the Office of Educational Equity & Integration hosted a March 18 event about Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues. Ron Rabinovitz discussed his lifelong relationship with Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in 1947. Rabinovitz was 10 years old when he began writing letters to Jackie. “His story is one of friendship, sportsmanship, courage and adversity,” read a pre-event notice from Community Education. “To add to the excitement of the event, our own high school and elementary age students will describe what a true hero means to them in words, song, dance and unity.” The event was held Monday, March 18, at Woodbury High School.   Like Patch on Facebook | Follow us on …

Woodbury Falls to Eden Prairie in State AAAA Quarterfinal, 70-59

Diallo Powell led the team with 19 points, and Mario Franco added 17, but the Royals' season ends with a 25-5 overall record after falling in the Class AAAA quarterfinals.

The fourth-seeded Woodbury Royals boys basketball team fell to the fifth-seeded Eden Prairie Eagles — 70-59 — in the quarterfinal round of the Class AAAA Minnesota state tournament on Wednesday afternoon. Woodbury trailed by five 33-28 at the end of the first half, and the Eagles led by as many as 12 points early in the second half. Woodbury was able to cut the deficit to four with about eight minutes remaining, but the Eagles took control over the final minutes. The Royals were led by guard Diallo Powell with 19 points and forward Mario Franco with 17 points. Both finished with nine rebounds. Andre Wallace led Eden Prairie with 20 points.
