Top Stories of 2012, No. 2: X Marks the (Workout) Spot

As we ring in the New Year, here’s a rundown of the most-viewed stories on Patch in 2012.

Editor’s note: This was the biggest surprise when it came to the most-read stories of the year. There wasn’t much to this post, considering I never heard back from company officials. And this story about the changes at the gym seemed to get more steam: Power Lifters Feel Pressed Out at Woodbury’s Xperience Fitness Here’s the story, which was published May 3, 2012. Power Lifters Feel Pressed Out at Woodbury’s Xperience Fitness

New “sarcastic” signage at the gym targets common gym practices of power lifters, they say.

The writing, apparently, is on the wall. Since Xperience Fitness took over the Woodbury Gold’s Gym, power lifters say new (or newly enforced) rules are singling them out. New “sarcastic” signs have been put up, warning members about grunting, using chalk and wearing torn clothing, said Val Huerta, of Woodbury, who has been a member there since Gold’s Gym opened. He says the signs target power lifters such as himself. One sign, according to Huerta’s son Chago, says: “We want our members ripped, not their clothing.” “It was really disrespectful,” said Huerta, who has since quit the gym. “Basically, you’re not wanted there.” He and Fenn Cournoyer, also a power lifter, said a friend was told not to wear sleeveless shirts and the signage seems …

Gold’s Gym is Now Xperience Fitness

Vertical Fitness Group is converting 11 Gold’s Gym locations to Xperience Fitness, according to a report.

Gold’s Gym in Woodbury is now Xperience Fitness. There is a new sign announcing the change at the fitness center, located at 1555 Queens Drive in Woodbury. Employees there directed Patch to an official in Wisconsin who did not return phone calls seeking comment. Vertical Fitness Group—an Appleton, Wis.-based health club company—has converted 11 Gold’s Gym locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin to Xperience Fitness, according to a post on marketwatch.com.
