The Woodbury Fire Department was among several agencies that responded to the early-morning house fire in Afton.
A home at the 1100 block of Manning Avenue South in Afton was destroyed by fire early Friday morning. One man and his dog were able to escape the blaze, which broke out at about 4:15 a.m. Friday morning, according to Tom Frazer, communications coordinator with Washington County. “The house appears to be a total loss,” he said. The fire was under control by about 6:45 a.m. Friday morning, Frazer said. At about 9:45 a.m. the house was still smoking and crews were putting water on the structure. We love how Woodbury reveals its small-town character each Independence Day.
There are a couple of times a year when I don’t like to be away from Woodbury. Independence Day is one of those times. I didn’t grow up in a place where such a “large” town could shrink down for a few hours and feel like such a “small” town. But now I live walking distance from Ojibway Park and its upcoming Fourth of July festivities. The experience is so good, so family-friendly. It’s such a community expression of celebration and I don’t like to miss it. I recommend priming your history pump with a video series that depicts our country’s founding. My kids were introduced to America, The Story of Us in school. I found it online and we’re all hooked on its mesmerizing account of U.S. history. To commemorate Independence Day, we like to …

Dave and Dan Jarvis, brothers and owners of the newly opened Current, have completely gutted and transformed the former digs of Catfish Saloon into an electric, lively and energetic dining spot.
Current, the brainchild of brothers Dave and Dan Jarvis of the Afton House Inn family, officially opened on April 1, with a grand-opening scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. “Our guests and neighbors have been asking us for years to open up something like this, and with the economic indicators finally taking an upturn, it was time,” Dave Jarvis said. As far as the restaurantʼs name, he said they solicited many people for possible ideas and someone mentioned the name, Current. “We wanted a name that kept pace with life, an energetic name of sorts, and yet still had a connection with the St. Croix River, since weʼre located right next to it. The name Current fit the bill perfectly,” he said. You could say the food entrees…

So sad. This snowmobiler Tim had his accident just ten days before Ron Spychalla had his. The accidents weren't all that far from each other. Fortunately, Ron lived -- but was severely injured. There were a lot of snowmobile accidents on the river that winter. Hopefully law enforcement will patrol that general area for many years to come. Two and a half years is a LONG time for Mr. Pease's family…   more ›
