Woodbury Blockbuster Going Out Of Business
Staff of seven laid off; video store will be in liquidation through March.
Four days before Christmas, the seven staff members of Woodbury’s Blockbuster store found out they would soon be out of jobs and that they had five days to prepare the store for liquidation. Christmas Day was the last day to rent videos and games at the store, which will be open until March 13, with discounts on all products increasing each week as the closure date approaches. DVDs are currently being sold for $9.99, games and new retail items are 10 percent off and Blu-ray discs are 15 percent off. “The store did good, but the rent was just too high,” said an employee who wished to remain anonymous to protect their job through March. The store’s two managers received small severance packages, but regular employees did not.

Building owners will lower rent as they see their properties go vacant. City government doesn't control that. City government also does not control the State Farm property. There are all sorts of market-based reasons that could account for that property still being vacant--like the vast amount of vacant commercial and office space in the metro for one thing.
