New Dance Studio Coming to Woodbury’s Valley Creek Mall

Yackel Dance is relocating from Cottage Grove.

The Valley Creek Mall will once again be home to a dance studio with the announcement that Yackel Dance is coming to Woodbury.

The studio is moving to Woodbury from Cottage Grove, according to a Thursday, July 25, release from Wellington Management.

Yackel Dance Studio plans to open in its new location Aug. 15, owner Denise Yackel told Patch on Friday morning.

"We're very excited," she said.

Yackel Dance Studio is not taking over the old Tropical Ballroom space. It is going in at the previously vacant space behind Warners' Stellian, Yackel said.

Yackel Dance Studio was founded in 1967, and has been in Cottage Grove for about 30 years. The move will allow the studio to expand, Yackel said. It also draws students from Woodbury, Stillwater, Oakdale and Hudson, Wis., she said.

"We’re excited about our new 4,829-square-foot space," Yackel said in a statement, "because we’ll have larger dance and waiting rooms as well as additional staff and even more opportunities for dancers."

A grand-opening event, which will feature dancing demonstrations at the Valley Creek Mall, is planned for Sept. 7.

The dance studio offers a wide variety of programs for toddler through high school-aged students. Yackel Dance Studio has received numerous regional and national awards; the studio focuses on tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip-hop dance.

The Valley Creek Mall was once the home of Tropical Ballroom, which changed its business model to host “mobile” classes and changed its name to Dance and Entertainment.

Meanwhile, there is a strong existing youth dance community in Woodbury. A 2012 Patch competition asking users to vote for their favorite was fierce.
