Volunteerism in the Community: THANK YOU—From Me

Volunteering at Woodbury Days!!

In today's post, I would like to switch gears and talk about a group of people that my wife and I have had the honor of joining this past year. A group that puts in countless hours for the people of Woodbury to enjoy the "Talk of the Town."

Yes, I am talking about Woodbury Days. A tremendous group of people, who are committed to providing a great three day event at the end of August every year, come together throughout the year and plan this event. When my wife initially asked if I wanted to be a part of this group, I was somewhat hesitant. I didn't know if I would be able to commit the time to this endeavor as I was looking for work at the time.

We went to a dinner at one of the member's homes in the dead of winter to get to say hello and meet some of the people we would be working with to plan this event. Once there, we didn't know too many people, and as with any new group, there is some ice breaking that needs to occur. I admittedly was intrepid as I didn't want to make a fool of myself. While I made a few connections during that first dinner, I could have done better. Better at introducing myself and being a part of the group. My wife, on the other hand, was better at this than I was that night.

But, I have to tell you, I am really glad my wife kept after to me to be a part of this group.  Everyone in this group is just as nice as could be and I was able to part of something bigger than any one person.  The amount of time, planning, thought, logistics, sweat, blood and tears that goes into this event is staggering and much more involved than I ever imagined.

Being a part of this talented group of extraordinary people has taught me about the type person that I want to be in my life. It has also reminded me of the absolute good in people.  Here is a group of people who freely give of their time so the rest of the community can come together and enjoy our wonderful city. It has also taught our children the value of volunteerism and hard work. Our children put in as many hours as us for the event itself and had a great time doing the work.

In closing, I am proud to be part of this fantastic organization and look forward to working with them for many years to come. For you, the reader, if you would like to become a part of this wonderful group, let me know and I can get you in touch with the Council President to discuss those opportunities. You won't be disappointed, I promise.  As long as we all stay hydrated in the ninety degree heat, all will be well.  As a good friend of mine recently found out.
