Woodbury Hot Rod Enthusiast: Classic Car a 'Piece of Art'

Tom Adams will once again have a vehicle on display at this year's 3M Rod & Custom Car Club Car Show at Woodbury Days.

Woodbury resident Tom Adams loves cars.

His first was a 1957 Chevy. He sold it in 2009.

“I couldn’t watch it go on the truck,” Adams said. “I had my dad load it up. It was tough.”

Adams, 40, has enjoyed cars, specifically hot rods, since he was a youngster, working on them with his father, a mechanic, as soon as he was old enough.

A member of the Minnesota Street Road Association, Adams has won several awards for his hot rods, and will once again have a vehicle on display at this year’s 3M Rod & Custom Car Club show at Woodbury Days.

It’s an orange and black 1939 Chevrolet with plenty of chrome inside and vroom under the hood.

The car is also up for a Minnesota Street Road Association award. He’ll find out this January if he owns the 2013 Street Rod of the Year.

Adams, who noted that there’s a decent-sized group of hot rod enthusiasts in Woodbury, says people won’t look back 20 years from now and say: “I’m going to remember my Ford Focus.”

A classic car is “a piece of art,” he said.

“The cars have character,” Adams said. “You can see faces in them.”

Adams, who works in manufacturing, has also started up a business (Adams’ Rod Shop) that rebuilds hot rods. He would like to do it full time eventually.

His wife Jill said she’s supportive of his passion and proud of the work her husband and father-in-law do—building the cars from the ground up.

For Adams, it’s a joy and an escape to work on those pieces of art.

“It’s like I’m in the zone,” he said.
