County Plans Name Change for Cottage Grove Road

From Washington County:

In anticipation of the completion of an intersection realignment in southern Washington County, a portion of 70th Street South will receive a new county highway number Oct. 1.

Washington County is constructing a new alignment of 70th Street extending eastward from the existing southern intersection of 70th Street and Keats Avenue, which is currently a “T” intersection with an all-way stop. After the project, this intersection will be a single-lane roundabout with roadways from all four directions, while Military Road will become a “T” intersection with Keats Avenue when the east side of the intersection is relocated to the south.

In conjunction with this project, Washington County Public Works will make a numbering change for 70th Street from Keats Avenue in Cottage Grove to Afton State Park in Denmark Township. This segment is now designated as County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 20, which will be changed to CSAH 22 to match the county highway number for 70th Street west of Keats Avenue.

This change is expected to reduce driver confusion and excessive signage at the new roundabout.  This change ensures that the roadway numbering in this area corresponds to the new roadway configuration, and 70th Street will have the same county highway number for its entire length from Highway 61 to Afton State Park. 70th Street west of Keats Avenue is already known as CSAH 22, and has been for many years.

New highway signs will be erected establishing 70th Street east of Keats Avenue as CSAH 22. CSAH 20 signs will remain in place for approximately one year, with a plaque reading “OLD” mounted above them, to assist drivers with the transition to the new highway number. In addition, temporary directional guide signs will direct unfamiliar drivers onto the new route to Afton State Park.
