Thousands to Descend on Woodbury for Lions Club Garage Sale

Every sale has something a little offbeat. What's the oddest item that will be featured at your sale this week? Tell us in the comments section.

There will be bus tours coming from up north, plenty of shoppers from the five-state area… and the Lions Club’s website gets hits from across the country.

“Even from Europe,” said Chris Holthe, president of the Woodbury Lions Club. “It’s amazing how many people come in.”

The 2013 Woodbury Lions Community Garage Sale starts Thursday, May 9; it’s the 36th annual citywide event.

The sales—advertised as 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—run through Saturday, May 11, Holthe said.

“And we just pray for good weather,” he said.

More than 650 homes (a fairly typical number) have registered to participate in this year’s event, which the city of Woodbury for the first time has co-sponsored.

Directories for the sales will be available starting tonight, Wednesday, May 8, at most Woodbury gas stations and grocery stores, Holthe said.

The Lions Club is looking at creating an electronic directory for next year’s event, he said.

It’s the Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and net proceeds from the event are returned to the community to support:

  • youth (including scholarships and youth development programs);
  • the Woodbury Lions Veterans Memorial;
  • the Christian Cupboard food shelf;
  • individuals with specific sight and hearing needs; and
  • other community service initiatives.
