Local Voices: Susan Komen 3 Day Walk

Stephanie Hartje walking the Susan Komen 3 day

My daughter, Stephanie, and two of her friends have been taking part in the Twin Cities 3 Day walk.

We have gone to cheer them on at two of the cheering stations. It really is very inspiring to see these dedicated people walking to find a cure for a disease that hits home with almost everyone.

My husband's mother had breast cancer three times before she lost her battle. My daughter is walking for her, and some of her friend's family members who have struggled with cancer. A few of my cousins and some friend's have had cancer as well.

The organizers of this event do a good job taking care of the walkers. They have people who are stationed along the way for medical help, food, water, toilets etc.  They have a bus to pick up anyone who just can't manage to walk those last few miles.

And, they have cheering stations so we can go and encourage them to keep going.  Sixty miles is a loooong way to walk.

This morning, one family was there dressed in pj's with curlers in the hair! It was perfect. Every walker going by had a smile on their face when they saw them.  Everyone claps and shouts encouragement. It was a great way to start the day.

They end up the walk at the Capital today with a closing ceremony that is bound to be emotional and inspiring. We plan to be there. It starts about 4:30 but come early to find parking.
