Woodbury Police: Jogger Was Not Sexually Assaulted

Following the investigation of an April incident at Markgrafs Lake Park, police now say there was no rape.

There was no , police announced Tuesday.

After police interviewed the woman and those who know her several times, she eventually told investigators no sexual assault occurred, said Jay Alberio, the police department’s public information officer.

On April 23, the woman told police police she was jogging along a path at and was at about 5:30 a.m.

She told police she was attacked by a man but had no further description of the alleged assailant. The 33-year-old said she did not know him.

“We wanted to reassure local residents, who have expressed concerns about their safety,” Director Lee Vague said in a statement. “However, as always, residents are encouraged to take personal safety precautions by being aware of their surroundings, traveling in numbers and keeping to well-lighted areas.”

Alberio would not comment on the woman’s mental state, but said police are working to get her the “assistance she needs.”

Police always have to assume a crime occurred and follow up with every lead, said Alberio, who also praised the officers who investigated the incident for their thorough work. “Numerous hours were put into it.”

As for the , Alberio said the woman did not collect it on her person that day.

At the time of the incident, police said they had trouble finding a similar case in recent years. Days after the April report, residents said .

The important thing to note, Alberio said, is that while this incident turned out to be unfounded, residents should always take precautions when going out alone, especially during late evenings and early mornings.
